City Council Approves Deferral of Operating and Capital Budgets Amidst Fire Department Pay Concerns

The deferral was requested to allow more time to analyze the budget and propose amendments, particularly concerning the fire department's pay issues and the desired 2% annual increase. Council members expressed various perspectives on the fire department's compensation and the administration's past actions, with a consensus to resolve the matter by the June 11th meeting, ensuring the budget is passed by the city charter deadline of June 15th. The capital budget (Summary Ordinance Number 14,127) also received a one-meeting deferral for similar reasons.
First Readings of Ordinances Cover Budget Amendments, Equipment Purchases, Repairs, and Grant Plans
The council reviewed several ordinances for first reading. These included amendments to existing ordinances to correct amounts for roofing solutions LLC and increase the annual not-to-exceed amount for WW Granger Incorporated. This included ordinance 14,128 accepting a bid from A1 Signs LLC for a welcome sign, ordinance 14,129 accepting a bid from Roofing Services Incorporated for the Rivertown Theater roof, and ordinance 14,130 accepting a bid from Roofing Solutions LLC for Kenner City Hall roof repairs and window replacement. They also approved ordinance 14,131 for aluminum sheet and sign blanks from Vulcan Incorporated, ordinance 14,132 for AI security software from SHI International Corporation, ordinance 14,133 for a grant for police overtime, ordinance 14,134 for a change order on the Woodlake Playground Demolition, ordinance 14,135 for playground systems from Swift Recreation LLC, and ordinance 14,136 for valve supply from Simso Incorporated.
Community Project Updates: Parks Upgraded, Sports Seasons Begin, and Infrastructure Project Ahead of Schedule
Council members provided updates on various community initiatives. District 4 reported on wastewater pump installations and the start of the baseball/softball season. The skate park received new solar lights after a two-year grant process. District 3 reported on LED lighting upgrades at Galatas Park and progress on a pickleball court at Beachree Heights. Updates were also given on the Roosevelt street project, which is significantly ahead of schedule, and Lincoln Park's inclusive sports activities.
