Port 1850 LLC Site Plan and Plat Approval Continued to August 25th

Items 10.1 (Site Plan) and 10.2 (Plat Approval) for Port 1850 LLC at 1850 Northeast 7th Avenue were requested for continuance. The initial proposed continuance date was June 23rd, 2026. Commissioner Ramolei suggested continuing the hearing to the last meeting in August, specifically August 25th, to ensure both parties could be present. Mr. Edwin J. Stacker, representing Port 1850 LLC, agreed to the June 23rd continuance but expressed reservations about the August date. Mr. John Jorgensson, representing Dr. Missy Williams and the Dania Beach Verment Project, stated availability throughout the summer except for June 18th-29th and the last week in July. The Vice Mayor disagreed with postponing to August, citing previous delays. Ultimately, the commission voted to continue the items to the August 25th meeting, with concerns noted about an outstanding EIR report from the county. The City Attorney explained that the county process for an EIR can take up to six months.

Pilot Language Program Approved; Commissioners Fund First Semester

The Parks and Recreation department presented a proposal for a 'Speak 101' program offering introductory language classes, starting with Spanish, at various recreation facilities. The program aims to help participants learn a secondary language and immerse in new cultures. The cost to the city per semester is estimated at $2,400, with participant fees set at $65 for residents and $100 for non-residents. Vice Mayor and Commissioner Ramolei offered to contribute to the program's cost. The commission reached consensus for Commissioner Llewellyn and Commissioner Ramolei to split the $2,400 cost equally ($1,200 each) for the first semester, allowing the program to proceed as a pilot.

City Commission Advances Ordinance to Standardize Advisory Board Member Attendance and Residency

An ordinance was presented for first reading to amend sections of the city code regarding advisory board attendance, alternate board members, and eligibility. The ordinance seeks to standardize attendance requirements, allowing two absences per year (excused or unexcused), with removal upon the third absence. It also modifies the residency requirement to 12 months. Commissioners debated the strictness of the absence policy and the timing of implementation, with some advocating for stricter guidelines and others for more flexibility. The city attorney clarified that while virtual attendance is prohibited, telephonic participation is allowed if a quorum is physically present. The ordinance passed its first reading.
