Coolidge Airport Secures FAA Grants for Taxiway B Design
The council approved Resolution 26-20, ratifying the execution of grant agreements with the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The grants, identified as 3-04-0011-021 and 3-04-0011-022, are for the design costs of taxiway B construction and geometry reconfiguration at the Coolidge Municipal Airport. These funds will cover design, engineering, and environmental aspects, leading to a future construction phase expected to cost approximately $2 million.
Council Reports Highlight Public Works, Community Events, and Environmental Meeting
During the mayor and council's reports, Councilmember Bagnall congratulated Officer Bluer on taking a commander's position. Councilmember Gilbert addressed the issue of trash piling up, noting it looks terrible and stating that a plan to deal with it will be implemented starting the following day. He also commended all departments for the successful 4th of July celebration. Councilmember Harris had no report. Councilmember Saavedra provided information about an upcoming environmental meeting on July 22nd regarding the Desert Southwest energy transfer pipeline project, which aims to bring natural gas to power 6 million homes in Arizona. She also mentioned a successful backpack giveaway event hosted by the police and Kiwanis, which served over 800 children, including some from Florence. She noted the first monsoon of the year and reported on minor storm damage, including a flag pole at St. Charles Park.
Coolidge Council Approves Equipment Purchases, Tables Water Truck Deal
The city council reviewed several consent agenda items, including appointments, plans, and cooperative purchasing agreements. Notably, the purchase of a 2017 Freightliner M21-106 4K water truck from Herc Rentals Inc. for approximately $95,668.50 was tabled. The Public Works department decided to withdraw the item because the truck was a manual transmission, and they sought an automatic to standardize the fleet. The council also approved the purchase of a 2026 Brazos 40 pit boss belly dump trailer for $49,726 and a 2026 Caterpillar 265 compact loader and cold planner for $138,886.46, both through cooperative purchasing agreements with Empire Southwest LLC. Additionally, a support and maintenance services agreement with DBT Transportation Services LLC for the All-Weather Observation System (AWOS) at the Coolidge Municipal Airport was approved. The claims for May 2026 were also approved.
Coolidge Adopts Property Tax Levies for Fiscal Year 2027
The council considered and approved Ordinance 26-11, which sets the property tax levies for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2027. The primary tax levy is set at $1.6253 per $100 of assessed value, with no increase exclusive of new construction. The secondary property tax is set at $0.2336 per $100 of assessed value, totaling $617,438 to cover existing debt service projects. The total tax levy per $100 of assessed valuation is approximately $1.8589. For a $300,000 home, the total annual tax increase is estimated to be around $540.
City Approves Minor General Plan Amendment for 160-Acre Industrial Development
The city council considered a minor general plan amendment to change a 160-acre parcel from business and commerce to industrial and manufacturing land use. This amendment is a precursor to rezoning the same parcel to facilitate the Clark Pacific industrial site. Public comment was opened, and one representative from Passofino was present to answer questions. The applicant noted significant public interest in the project, with 600 job applications received for 140 openings advertised.
