City Council Approves Final Assessment for Ironwood Water Main Project
The City Council unanimously approved Resolution 2628, the final assessment resolution for the Ironwood Water Main Project, by a vote of 5-0. The resolution authorizes the imposition of non-ad valorem special assessments to fund the project. The estimated total cost for the project, including construction, legal fees, financial advisory fees, and financing costs, is approximately $4,288,000. The project is being financed through this assessment, with residents having the option to prepay their assessment to avoid financing costs. The first mailing of the assessment information has been completed, and a second mailing, including the prepayment option, is due by July 27th. The project itself is progressing well with Landmark Services as the contractor, and residents have expressed gratitude for the city's initiative in addressing the long-standing need for updated water infrastructure, which was originally a private system from the late 1960s/early 1970s.
City Council Denies Jordan Creek Townhome Development Application
The City Council voted 5-0 to deny the application for a Planned Development Project (PDP) amendment for 1201 27th Street East and 2906 11th Avenue East. The proposed amendment, Option B, sought to allow for 98 residential units comprised of four- and six-unit townhomes, a reduction from the previously denied 106 units. This was a revision from a prior denial on May 13, 2026, where the council voted to deny an application for 106 units. The applicant requested the case be continued to allow for a new plan, which was presented today. The denial was based on concerns about density, traffic impact, and site-specific ingress/egress issues, despite the applicant presenting reduced trip generation numbers and enhanced open space and buffer plantings. Council members expressed concerns about the density increase from the originally approved 66 duplex units, the traffic impact on 27th Street East, and the lack of significant changes to address concerns from previous hearings. The denial means the applicant may proceed with the previously approved Option A (33 single-family attached buildings, each on its own lot) or submit a new application.
City Council Approves Cost-Saving Water Main Installation Alongside Police Station Construction
The City Council authorized the administration to spend $277,000 and execute a contract with Woodruff and Stones for the installation of a 400 linear foot, 18-inch ductile iron water transmission main on the north side of 8th Avenue between 2nd Street West and 3rd Street West. This installation is being coordinated with the construction of the new police station by NDC. The city is leveraging the existing road opening by NDC to install the waterline, which is part of a larger $3 million pipeline project designed to create redundancy in the city's high-service station transmission system, addressing a single point of failure. This proactive measure is estimated to save the city approximately $110,000 by utilizing the current road opening. The project is expected to enhance water system reliability and sustainability. The approval was unanimous (5-0).
City Council Approves 5.6% Health Insurance Premium Increase Amidst Cost-Saving Measures
The City Council voted 5-0 to approve a 5.6% rate increase for employee and retiree health insurance premiums for fiscal year 2026-27. This increase will be proportionally split, with both employees and the city each contributing an additional 5.6% towards the total premium. This results in an approximate monthly increase for employees ranging from $0.51 to $25, depending on their chosen plan and coverage level. The city's contribution will increase by approximately $507,000. This decision comes after implementing several cost-saving measures, including switching Medicare Advantage plans to Humana (saving retirees $24/month), replacing supplemental insurance carriers with SunLife (offering premium savings of 8-13% for accident plans and 10-75% for hospital indemnity), and changing the pharmacy benefit manager to MedImpact (projected savings of $615,000 compared to renewal terms). The overall health insurance fund is projected to remain at budget. The council also approved switching flexible spending and health savings account administrators from HealthEquity to MedCom and adjusted the HSA contribution by front-loading $500 in October and another $500 in February for eligible employees.
City Council Approves Inaugural Manatee River Turkey Trot for Thanksgiving Day
The City Council approved a permit application for the first-ever Manatee River Turkey Trot, a 5K race event organized by the Big Bill Foundation. The event is scheduled for Thanksgiving Day, November 26th. The race will start at the Marriott on the Palmetto side, cross the DeSoto Bridge, turn around on 3rd Avenue, and return. The event is expected to draw 1,500 to 2,000 runners. The City of Palmetto and FDOT have already approved the event, and the City of Bradenton's approval was granted unanimously (5-0). The event is a collaboration between Bradenton and Palmetto, utilizing the Palmetto Marriott for parking and activities. The goal is to spread out events and leverage the riverwalk areas. The race is expected to conclude by 10 a.m.
