Regeneration of Former Bowen Homes Site into Mixed-Income Community Underway

The former Bowen Homes site, a government housing project known for crime and blight, is undergoing regeneration into a mixed-income community. Atlanta Housing, in partnership with HUD and other organizations, is redeveloping the site, which was torn down in 2009. The new development will include approximately 2,000 units, with about 40% designated as affordable housing. Future plans encompass commercial ventures, green space access, and an elementary school. The project is being completed in 12 phases over 13 years, with phase one, including over 150 mixed-income homes, 75% complete and families expected to move in by early next year. Workforce development opportunities and a memorial plaza honoring bombing victims are also planned. Residents formerly living in Bowen Homes will have the right of first refusal for the new units. The site is also planned to connect to the Beltline.
