The Police Committee report for July 6th, 2026, indicated two officers in the academy graduating July 31st, 2026, bringing the total officer count to 93 with one new officer starting. City Council Reviews Ordinance for Service Purchase, Amends Business Name
The City Council considered an ordinance to authorize members to purchase services from Charmaine Taylor DBA Emerald High Class Technology, with a proposed amendment to change the name to Emerald High Class Services. This ordinance was read for the first time, and the amendment to change 'Technology' to 'Services' was approved. The ordinance will be brought back in two weeks for further explanation and review.
City Explores Reviving Community Pride Programs and Announces Upcoming Children's Events
Councilwoman Muhammad reported on a discussion about the city potentially undertaking its own recycling initiative, though funding is a concern. The council also reminisced about past 'city beautiful' and 'yard of merit' programs, expressing a desire to revive similar initiatives to foster community pride, especially considering the prevalence of rental properties. A 'Bounce Town' event is planned for July 25th at Horn Park for children aged 5-12, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A back-to-school backpack drive is also scheduled for July 25th at the arena from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
City Council Adds and Approves Several Resolutions, Including Budget Amendments and Tax Incentive Endorsement
The City Council added several items to the agenda for reading by title only: R1 (resolution certifying local government endorsement of Sedaiver, Inc. for tax back program), R2 (resolution to amend the 2025 budget), R3 (resolution to amend the 2026 budget), and BDCI (Victor, related to mosquito spraying). R1 was approved and assigned Resolution number 2360. R2 was approved and assigned Resolution number 2361. R3 was approved and assigned Resolution number 2362. The BDCI item, concerning mosquito spraying services, will be addressed by the city attorney to waive competitive bidding.
Sanitation Department Commended for Outstanding Work; Community Beautification Discussed
During the committee reports, Councilwoman Muhammad praised Director Montgomery and the sanitation department for their outstanding work, highlighting their efforts in various areas including litter collection, tire disposal, and assisting seniors.
