City Council Approves Bill Fixing Compensation for Officials and Employees
The council considered and passed amended Bill Number 9583, which fixes the compensation for city officials and employees from July 13, 2026, and repeals ordinance number 7384. The amendments were described by the Human Resources Director. The council voted to accept these amendments, and then approved the amended bill. The vote was called by the clerk, and all members voted in favor.
Resident Raises Concerns on Streetlights, Alleys, and Park Maintenance
During the citizen participation section, a resident, Tom Sullivan, highlighted several ongoing issues related to public safety and infrastructure maintenance. These include multiple streetlights being out at intersections, creating dark and unsafe conditions, particularly on Kingsland Avenue. He also noted issues with utility wires hanging down and damaged dumpsters in alleys, mentioning specific locations in the eastern end of the third ward. Sullivan questioned the effectiveness of city inspectors given their salaries and suggested that funds from Costco developments should address these problems. He also pointed out issues with potholes in an alley and mentioned that trees planted in Ekard Park as part of renovation died due to lack of care, and shrubbery around a tribute to first responders was replaced with wood chips.
SHED Provides Update on City Home Repair Program Progress
Joel Pew, Executive Director for SHED, provided a brief update on the city home repair program. He meets weekly with the third ward coordinator to review scenarios and address concerns. SHED has submitted timeline considerations, worked through workflows, delineated responsibilities, and presented what they believe will be SHED's role in a new program and potential partnership. SHED looks forward to continuing to partner with the city.
New Traffic Code Amendments Proposed for Parking Restrictions on Trinity Ave and Stop Intersection at Center/Stanford
The council introduced Bill Number 9584, which proposes amending Schedule 3, Table 3E of the traffic code to add parking restrictions on the east side of Trinity Avenue, from the alley at 524 Trinity Avenue to the driveway at 510 Trinity Avenue, prohibiting parking at all times. Additionally, Bill Number 9585 was introduced, amending Schedule 7 of the traffic code to add a stop intersection at Center Drive and Stanford Avenue.
Retired Attorney Criticizes City's ADA Signage, Questions Contractor Liability
John Williams, a retired attorney, commented on the inadequacy of the city's ADA signage, stating he had difficulty obtaining information over the phone and navigating the building. He also questioned the secondary liability of the city's contractor for these issues, suggesting the city is responsible in the first instance. He noted that his cab driver had inadequate English skills, hindering his transportation. Williams mentioned he was also on the docket for another matter but wished to address the signage issue.
