Rocky Mount Police Department Reports Mixed Crime Statistics for Q2, Addressing Increases in Assaults and Robberies
The Chief of Police presented the second quarter crime statistics, highlighting a 23% year-to-date decrease in overall crime. However, specific categories showed increases: aggravated assaults were up 1%, driven by domestic issues, with a 31% increase in aggravated assaults. Robberies (individual) increased by 27%, and commercial robberies rose by 33%. Motor vehicle thefts were up 29%, and arson saw a 5% increase, though this was attributed to a small number of actual arson cases (2 out of 5 incidents meeting the criteria). Homicides were down 75%, with all six cases cleared by arrest. Rape cases saw a significant 400% increase quarter-over-quarter, from 1 to 5 cases, though year-over-year comparisons showed decreases. The department is employing strategies such as increased patrols in high-crime areas, business checks, and victim assistance to mitigate these issues. Discussions also touched upon repeat offenders, the court system's role, and the challenges of investigating domestic violence cases. The department is also working on filling staffing vacancies and is pursuing accreditation.
