Battle of Plattsburg 100th Anniversary Invitation and NERC Program Costs Discussed

Don Donahghue, president of the 1844 Commemoration, addressed the council to express gratitude for the city's support of the annual Battle of Plattsburg commemoration and to extend an invitation to the 100th anniversary of the McDunn Monument dedication. This event, a centennial dedication, will include army bands, music, and speeches, aiming to replicate the scale of the original 100 years ago. An evening reception will be held at Valport Boathouse, with reservations available on their website. The council also discussed the mandatory membership and associated costs of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) compliance program, which is essential for maintaining system reliability and is funded by ratepayers.

Asphalt Costs Rise, Tree Removal Continues, and Sinkhole Issues Addressed

The city council discussed the increasing cost of asphalt and the impact on street paving projects. The cost of asphalt has risen, affecting the budget for ongoing and future projects. Despite the increase, the city has sufficient funding to cover the additional costs through existing allocations and by adjusting spending resolutions if necessary. The council also reviewed the progress of tree removal and stump grinding, noting that damaged cottonwood trees were removed due to health concerns and the risk of collapse. Plans are underway to assess and replant the area with suitable tree species, considering factors like infrastructure impact. Additionally, the city is addressing numerous sinkholes caused by aging infrastructure, with plans to repair or replace affected pipes and systems. Funding for sinkhole repairs, particularly those adjacent to roads, is covered by chips, avoiding the general fund.
