W 6 Drainage and Infrastructure Project Faces Slight Delay, Completion Expected Early August
The city is moving forward with a drainage and infrastructure update, specifically for the W 6 area. While a completion date of July 28th was initially set, delays due to storms have pushed the projected completion to the first week of August. The project is a significant undertaking that will impact traffic, as Davidson Road will remain closed until completion. Updates on the project's status will be posted on the city website once a position is filled to manage social media.
Proposal to Increase Ocean Springs Road Speed Limit Sparks Debate on Safety and Traffic Flow
A motion was made to increase the speed limit on Ocean Springs Road from Dena Road west to Monaceel Boulevard east from 25 mph to 30 mph, while maintaining 25 mph approaching the roundabout. The motion was supported by a board member who cited frustration with the current speed limit and the belief that an increase would not significantly impact safety, especially for golf carts. However, another board member expressed concern about residents pulling out of subdivisions into faster traffic and the potential for increased speeding, suggesting that the timing might not be ideal due to upcoming construction on Dena Road.
Historic Preservation Commission Faces Quorum Issues, Delaying Application Reviews
The Mayor noted a problem with the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) lacking a quorum for its past three to four meetings, hindering the review of applications. Amanda, the relevant department representative, explained that due to the lack of quorum, a special call meeting was held for June, but the applicant's recusal prevented a vote on his cases. The HPC is currently unable to hold official meetings, delaying applications, including those for a sitting area and a swimming pool proposed by Mr. Owen White. The board discussed the need to address the quorum issue, potentially by reviewing attendance records and bylaws, and decided to place Mr. White's cases on the August 4th agenda for public comment.
Police Department to Utilize New Interactive Data Software for Investigations
The board approved an annual subscription agreement with Interactive Data LLC for the Police Department's use of the IDI Core software. This follows a 30-day trial period, during which investigators found the software to be more user-friendly and cost-effective than their current system (TL TransUnion). The Mississippi Department of Public Safety also uses this software. The software aids in investigative purposes, data research, and provides accumulated data from financial institutions and other sources.
