Normal Town Council Approves Ban on Kratom Sales
The Normal Town Council voted to prohibit the sale or distribution of kratom within the town limits. This decision followed public comment from residents with differing views on kratom, with some advocating for its use as a pain reliever and others expressing concerns about its addictive potential and the dangers of synthetic forms. Council members discussed the challenges of differentiating between natural and synthetic kratom, the lack of FDA approval, and the varying regulatory approaches at the state level, ultimately concluding that a ban on sales was the most prudent course of action due to safety concerns and the difficulty of enforcement. The ordinance specifically prohibits sale, not possession or use.
