Parks and Public Works Projects Nearing Completion, Paving Project Praised
Updates were provided on several public works and park projects. The Chambers Park project is essentially complete, with only minor site restoration and touch-up work remaining. Public works also completed storm water inlet repairs at PV Road, Wilson, Laurel, and Newton, and conducted milling, asphalt, and sealing on Pleasant Valley Road, Lions Run, Lion Sand Dune, and Crowoot. The paving project, including work on Sardis Road, is also nearing completion with final touches and sealing underway, and has received positive feedback from engineering and police departments regarding contractor communication and efficiency. Separately, discussions touched on a proposed children's bike overlay on courts at Fair Hollow, which has logistical issues due to fitting problems, and the status of the disc golf course, which is up and running and seeking sponsorships.
Council Addresses Sanitation Woes, Approves Land Use Items and Future Planning Steps
The meeting included standard procedural items such as approving minutes, roll call, and mayoral and administrator comments. A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to discussing the ongoing sanitation collection issues, including the provider's reasons for delays, contract penalties, and the process for addressing customer credits. Council members and residents expressed concerns about the service disruptions. Updates were provided on various community events and public works projects. The council also reviewed and approved several land use and subdivision items, and authorized advertisements for future public hearings and sales of municipal equipment. A report from the Medic One liaison highlighted a decrease in subscription rates and upcoming discussions with their director.
Council Approves Public Hearing for Capital Improvements Program and Updates Permit Fees
The council approved the advertisement for a public hearing for the 2027-2031 Capital Improvements Program (CIP) to be held on August 18th, 2026, at 7 p.m., followed by a workshop. Colleen has been responsible for preparing the CIP, despite recently taking on the role. The council also approved an update to fees for burning permits and leased audio/video requests, along with language clarifications in the building permit section to align fees and formatting, with no changes to the actual dollar amounts of the fees. The Mayor provided updates on community events including National Night Out, the Murrayville Farmers Market, and a Concert in the Park featuring Cilantro and Andro and Yellow Bridge Brewing Company. An update was also given on the 8th annual Falling Heroes ride honoring fallen soldiers, which will pass through Murraysville and Export on August 1st, hosted by Z&M Motorcycles.
Sanitation Collection Issues Persist, Council Reviews Contract Penalties
The council discussed ongoing issues with sanitation collections, specifically concerning missed Monday and Tuesday routes in various neighborhoods. Republic, the service provider, cited staffing shortages, vacations, heat, and equipment failures as reasons for the disruptions. These issues have been ongoing for several weeks and are occurring while the city is bidding out new sanitation service contracts. The city is working with Republic to address the backlog, with plans to complete missed pickups. Republic has indicated they are developing a credit program for affected customers. The council also reviewed contract language regarding penalties for missed pickups, which allows for billing Republic $250 per day for each offense, a provision that carries over to the new bid specifications.
Upcoming Community Events Include National Night Out, Farmers Market, Concert, and Veterans Ride
The mayor highlighted several upcoming community events. National Night Out is scheduled for Tuesday, August 4th, from 4 to 7 p.m. The Murrayville Farmers Market runs from June 4th to September 24th every Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. next to Murrayville Medic One on Sardis Road. A Concert in the Park is planned for July 28th, featuring Cilantro and Andro, along with Yellow Bridge Brewing Company, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Additionally, the 8th annual Falling Heroes ride, honoring fallen soldiers, will take place on August 1st, hosted by Z&M Motorcycles in David City. This event will involve approximately 40-50 motorcycles passing through Murraysville and Export with a police escort, honoring local fallen soldiers.
