City Council Adopts Comprehensive Deer Management Program
Ordinance 111-26 was adopted to create a comprehensive deer management program and authorize a nuisance abatement initiative. This program aims to control and reduce the white-tailed deer population through archery and sharpshooting programs, notification periods for hunts, and enhanced signage to reduce deer-vehicle incidents. The ordinance also addresses the destruction of native plants and the ecosystem due to overpopulation, with plans to restore understory vegetation. A program to offer harvested deer carcasses for consumption is also included, with any unclaimed meat to be donated. The program is expected to take five to eight years to bring the deer population to a maintenance level. The ordinance passed with an emergency clause.
