School Nurse Program Grant Fiscal Agent Changed to Jackson Hines Comprehensive Health Center
The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) board approved a modification to a grant originally awarded to the University of Mississippi Medical Center. The modification changes the fiscal agent for the Mary Kirkpatrick Haskell Mary Spayberry School Nurse Program to the Jackson Hines Comprehensive Health Center. This three-year grant, funded by the Mississippi Legislature, will not see an increase in its total dollar amount or term, only a change in the administrative entity. The program aims to support school nursing services.
Updates Provided on Adolescent Literacy and Math Initiatives Under Senate Bill 2294
The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) presented an update on the implementation of Senate Bill 2294, which includes the Adolescent Literacy Initiative and the Mississippi Math Act (M3). The Adolescent Literacy Initiative extends early literacy work to grades 4-8, requiring yearly screening, individual reading plans, and the hiring of reading specialists/dyslexia therapists by 2027. All reading instruction must be science-based. Students with unresolved deficiencies by 8th grade must enter remediation programs. The Math Initiative (M3) will deploy math coaches to grades 2-6 based on performance data, implement K5 math screeners, and create an algebra readiness indicator for 5th graders. MDE has conducted statewide superintendent meetings and regional professional learning sessions for both initiatives.
MDE Submits Final FY28 Budget Request of $3.4 Billion
The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) presented its final budget request for Fiscal Year 2028, totaling $3.4 billion. This figure represents a decrease of $2.4 million from the preliminary budget presented in June, attributed to a reduction in the overall Mississippi State Fund (MSF) request for FY28. The board approved this final budget request.
Two Educator and Resident Coaches Approved to Support Adolescent Literacy Initiative
The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) board approved an Educator and Resident Grant. This grant will fund two additional Educator and Resident (EIR) positions. These EIRs are part of the 15 literacy coaches who will provide support in the science of reading to schools with the lowest performance measures over the past two years. The total award for the five-year agreement for these two EIRs is $1,116,671.93. The selection process was competitive.
