Franklinton Secures $1.2M Investment for Industrial Park; Economic Development Foundation Pursues Grants
DeAnn Davis of the Washington Parish Economic Development Foundation announced that the town of Franklinton has secured a $1.2 million investment from the Louisiana Department of Economic Development for its industrial park, under the 'Fast Site' program. This project, with a total potential cost of $2.1 million, is supported by a no-interest state loan and is expected to begin construction within nine months. Davis also noted a growing interest in Washington Parish for manufacturing projects and updated on the establishment of the Economic Development Foundation as a 501(c)(3) to enhance grant-seeking capabilities. Resident Raises Concerns Over Potential Solar Farms, Data Centers, and Carbon Capture Projects in Washington Parish
During public participation, Andy Jones expressed concerns about the increasing prevalence of carbon capture, solar farms, and data centers in Louisiana and questioned if Washington Parish had been approached about such projects. He argued that these developments, particularly data centers and carbon collection, are too harmful and offer no return on investment, suggesting they are detrimental due to tax abatements and pilot programs. He advocated for ordinances on remediation for those in immediate vicinity, compensation for property value decrease (estimated at 15-20% for solar), and a moratorium on new projects if agreements cannot be reached. He emphasized educating landowners about the value of their land and the potential for irreversible loss.
Blood Center Director Urges Support for Blood Donations Amidst Critical Shortage
Ms. Susie Potter of the Blood Center presented information on the critical need for blood donations, emphasizing that the current supply is at 45% and dropped from 25% the previous week. She highlighted that the upcoming hurricane season makes this a life-or-death situation, as low supplies could lead to preventable deaths. Potter also discussed the difference between blood donations for transfusion and plasma center donations, which are processed into powders and not given directly to patients. She introduced a resolution to recognize community blood donation efforts during the semiquincentennial, urging council members to support it to increase the blood supply during the crucial June-September period.
Washington Parish Declares Surplus Truck for Auction, Proceeds to Fund New Equipment
The Washington Parish Council adopted Resolution Number 26-1496 to declare a 2006 Peterbilt truck as surplus and/or scrap movable property and authorize its disposal. The truck, which has been in the parish yard for some time, requires a new engine and has multiple issues, making repair impractical due to costs exceeding its value. The proposed disposal method is to send it to Henderson Auction, with proceeds to be used for purchasing new equipment.
