Resident Alleges Illegal Dumping; Proposal for Standardized Curb Addresses Made
During the public comment period, a resident named Caden May, residing at 220 East 47th Place, raised concerns about a development called Sunny Meadows. May stated that the developer allegedly dumped large amounts of fill dirt off East 49th Street without permits throughout late 2024, 2025, and early 2026. May claims city staff were aware of the dumping but did not take action, and that a stop-work requirement issued in response did not immediately halt the dumping. The resident cited health concerns due to dust and air pollution from the dirt pile, which is located upwind of their residence. Another resident, Carlos Sanchez, proposed establishing a standardized residential curb address policy to improve emergency service response times, suggesting four-inch reflective numbers with optional local school or community logos.
Kennewick City Council Adopts Ordinance to Retain Moratorium on Sexually Violent Predator Facilities
The Kennewick City Council adopted an ordinance affirming findings of fact and retaining a six-month emergency moratorium on the siting of Less Restrictive Alternative (LRA) housing facilities for sexually violent predators. This ordinance follows a public hearing and is intended to provide the city time to develop comprehensive regulations, as current ordinances are insufficient to address the potential impacts of such facilities. The moratorium, initially enacted on June 16th, 2026, prohibits the siting of new LRA facilities and related applications within all city zoning districts. The city is working with regional partners to ensure consistency in approach. Council members expressed support for the ordinance and the need for staff to have adequate time for regulatory development, with the possibility of extending the moratorium if necessary.
