James Island Council Approves Ordinance for Second Electric Meter on Large Lots

The Town Council of James Island held a second and final reading for Ordinance 2026-11, which amends Ordinance 2012-11 concerning electric meters. The original ordinance restricted single-family lots to one electric meter. The amendment allows for a second electric meter on a single-family lot if a zoning permit has been issued for a second dwelling on that lot, provided the lot is at least two-thirds of an acre. This change aims to allow for safe and independent metering for two separate dwellings on a large lot, distinct from Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). The ordinance passed unanimously.

Concerns Raised Over Construction Noise at Oak Bend Subdivision

The Town Council received an email regarding construction noise at the Oak Bend subdivision, built by DRB Homes on Dills Bluff Road. The email suggests that the town's existing ordinance regarding construction noise needs updating. Standard construction noise hours are outlined as weekdays 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., with no loud noise allowed on Sundays and major holidays. Work not producing loud, repetitive, or disruptive noise is technically legal past these hours, but heavy machinery and loud tools should cease by 7 p.m. The email suggests these guidelines need to be strictly enforced and potentially updated.

James Island Residents Voice Strong Opposition to Folly Road Medians

The Town Council of James Island discussed and heard public comments regarding the proposed medians on Folly Road, a project by the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT). Numerous residents expressed strong opposition to the medians, citing concerns about increased traffic congestion, unsafe cut-through traffic in residential areas, potential for more accidents, slower emergency response times, limited access for commercial deliveries, and negative impacts on local businesses. Speakers argued that Folly Road's unique nature as the island's sole main thoroughfare makes it unsuitable for median implementation, unlike other areas of the state. Alternatives such as improving bike lanes, sidewalks, speed limit assessments, lighted crosswalks, and additional traffic lights were proposed. Some speakers also voiced frustration with SCDOT's 'all-or-nothing' approach and perceived unwillingness to collaborate on alternative solutions. The council was urged to stand firm against the SCDOT's plans.
