Council Approves July Bill List Totaling Over $2.1 Million
The council authorized the payment of the July 20, 2026 bill list, totaling $2,184,344.50. This amount includes bill list payments of $1,615,722.20, payroll number 13 and 14 for $431,578.49, and payroll taxes of $137,639.36. The report for the second quarter of 2026 budget performance and meeting notes were also available. The next budget and finance committee meeting is scheduled for August 5th at 11:00 a.m.
Mass Community Foundation Awards Grants for Park Bench and Bridge Repairs
The Mass Community Foundation, represented by John Hart and Dustin Grim, presented information on their initiatives and awarded two grants. One grant of $1,000 from the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce Foundation will fund a park bench on Main Street. Another grant from Wingstop Restaurant Charities will support the resurfacing of a bridge in the community park. The foundation also highlighted the success of their recent four-mile classic race, which saw a significant increase in participation and fundraising compared to previous years. They are exploring two major future projects.
Mass Community Foundation Awards $1,000 Grant for Park Bench and Supports Bridge Resurfacing
The Mass Community Foundation presented two grant checks to the borough. The first was a $1,000 check from the Emmas Main Street Lehigh Valley of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce Foundation for a park bench on Main Street. The second check was from Wingstop Restaurant Charities to resurface a bridge in the community park, which is one of two bridges currently undergoing repairs. The Foundation also discussed its operational pathways, including grant completion, collective fundraising (mentioning the successful four-mile classic race), and legacy software for directed donations. They are currently evaluating two large projects for future funding.
Joseph Soofski Hired as New Chief of Police
The council voted to hire Joseph Soofski as the Chief of Police. The starting salary is set at $142,000, contingent upon the successful completion of a background check by the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association. He will also receive benefits and conditions as outlined in the preliminary offer of engagement, with a start date of September 7th, 2026. The motion was amended to include that the hiring is subject to a civil service exam, as required by borough code, and attorney review of said exam. The motion passed 7-0.
Street Vacation Hearing for Iron Furnace Foundry Flats Continues to August
A public hearing was held regarding the vacation of a portion of Perkyoming Street, adjacent to the Iron Furnace Foundry Flats apartment complex. The applicant, CSW Furnace Street Ammus LP, presented their case for vacating the street segment, stating it is landlocked, has no improvements, and serves no public purpose. The proposed vacation is in conjunction with plans for a fifth apartment building, for which zoning approval has already been received. Neighboring property owners raised concerns, leading the council to continue the hearing to the August meeting to allow for new notices to be sent, ensuring compliance with statutory notice periods. The council intends to address the street vacation in August after proper notification procedures are followed.
