East Windsor School Board Addresses School Year Length, Policy Updates, and Special Education Regulation Abolition

They also reviewed mandated policies including Superintendent Duties, Equity in School and Classroom Practices, Career Education and Academic Counseling, High School Diplomas, and Physical Restraint and Seclusion Techniques.
Parents Urge Opt-Out Policy for Student Devices Amidst Safety Concerns; Board Expresses Hesitation
During the public comment period, a parent, James Ain, representing 137 petition signers, requested the adoption of a parent rights opt-out policy for district-mandated internet-connected devices due to concerns about potential harm to children. He cited legal cases like KGM v. Meta Platforms and MC/ZG v. Google, alleging that companies knowingly market addictive products to students and fail to warn about dangers, prioritizing profits over safety. Another parent, Misty Avalone, echoed these concerns, stating her children were exposed to more screen time than initially represented and that much of the content could be taught more effectively by teachers. She also shared an instance of her daughter accessing a game through an educational app. In response, board member Mark stated the board is not currently prepared to develop a parental opt-out policy, emphasizing the educational benefits of technology and the responsibility to teach responsible use, while acknowledging concerns about over-reliance. The board also discussed the policy revision for internet-enabled devices (Policy 5516), aiming for a bell-to-bell provision and restricting use outside instructional spaces.
East Windsor Regional School District Approves New Assistant Principal and Discusses Summer Facility Upgrades
The board of education considered the appointment of Mr. Thomas Anderson as an assistant principal at Melvin H. Kreps Middle School. Mr. Anderson has prior experience as a middle school math teacher in Elizabeth and Patterson public schools. The board's approval of his appointment is recommended. The meeting also covered various summer facility upgrade projects across multiple schools, including HVAC improvements at Hightstown High School and Walter C. Black, as well as interior and hallway upgrades at GNR and parking lot expansion at EMK. Additionally, the board discussed updates on summer learning programs and the upcoming implementation of new policies regarding student use of internet-enabled devices.
