City Council Reviews Election Law Changes and Nexus Facility Update
The City Council discussed recent changes to election law impacting candidate and campaign finance privacy, extended canvassing dates, and adjustments to absentee voting procedures. Staff highlighted the increased use of direct balloting (early voting) over the traditional envelope process, noting that over 67% of absentee voters in the last election used direct balloting. The council expressed general support for moving to an 18-day direct balloting period only, as opposed to the full 46-day option including envelopes, to streamline processes and reduce staff burden. A plan for voter education on this change will be developed. Additionally, the council received an update on Nexus, a facility facing license suspension and potential revocation, and its implications for property taxes and city costs associated with calls for service.
