City Hall to be Illuminated for Overdose Awareness Week
The City Hall will be illuminated in purple from August 25th to August 31st in recognition of Shiitaka County Overdose Awareness Week and International Overdose Awareness Day. The council referred this request to the appropriate departments and approved it.
Council Reschedules Meeting, Approves Sidewalk Project Funding
Resolution 61-2026 was adopted, rescheduling the August 4th, 2026 common council meeting and public hearing for local law number 5. Resolution 62-2026 was also adopted, approving the lowest responsible bid for the CDBG 2025 sidewalk project year 3, which targets hazardous sidewalks throughout the city. The project will continue in eligible areas as long as funding is available.
Councilman Addresses Sinkhole Response, County Road Responsibilities, and Truck Traffic Concerns
Councilman Weisner addressed the sinkhole incident on Willowbrook and Central, stating that it is an intersection of two county roads designated as truck routes by the county, which handles paving and maintenance. He acknowledged the difficulty the intersection poses for large trucks and proposed meeting with residents and the county to find solutions. He also committed to improving communication by texting residents about incidents in their wards. Additionally, the council discussed the viaduct height on Brigham Road and its impact on truck traffic, with a resident noting that pavement additions may be reducing the clearance.
City Council Approves Minutes from Previous Meeting
The minutes from the regular common council meeting of Monday, July 6, 2026, were certified and presented to the mayor on Friday, July 17, 2026. In accordance with the Dunkerk City Charter, these minutes are now in full force and effect. The council approved the minutes as presented after a motion to dispense with the reading.
City Paving Efforts Underway; Residents Can Report Road Issues
Randy provided an update on street paving and pothole repairs, stating that the city has been covered at least once, but it's an ongoing effort. Recent work includes micro-paving in the first ward, which is cost-effective. Plans include milling and filling in the Washington 300 block and Swan Street. He explained that some roads lack proper base layers, leading to frequent potholes, and that a specialized hot patch truck is used for effective repairs. Residents can report issues via voicemail or text.
