Coppers Cove Council Debates FY2026-2027 Budget Amidst Deficit Concerns and Capital Project Funding
The city council discussed the proposed FY2026-2027 budget, focusing on a projected $1.9 million deficit in the general fund. Council members were presented with updated tax rate calculations indicating that property values have not increased significantly, resulting in similar tax revenue projections as the previous year. Potential strategies to address the deficit include utilizing the voter approval tax rate, which could reduce the deficit to $1.4 million. The council also reviewed proposed expenditures such as cost-of-living adjustments, market adjustments for police and fire departments, and investments in data security and mental health grants. Additionally, the council considered various capital projects funded through certificates of obligation (COs), including public works, water and sewer projects, vehicle and equipment replacement, cemetery expansion, golf course renovations, and city hall exterior repairs. There was discussion about deferring the cemetery project and using the general fund balance for city hall repairs.
