City Council Approves Alley Vacation for Superior Oil
The City Council discussed and approved the vacation of an alley. The alley is located between the cemetery and Superior Oil's property, which Superior Oil has recently purchased adjacent buildings to. Superior Oil requested the vacation for security and access purposes to protect their buildings. The city researched the request and found no abutting properties other than the cemetery. A storm sewer is the only infrastructure within the alley, which would transfer ownership to the new owner. The alley is currently surveyed as two-way and accessible from Grand Avenue. The council found no reason to deny the request. A public hearing was held, and the ordinance was approved following the required readings and motions.
City Council Approves Four Financial Resolutions
The City Council approved four resolutions related to financial transfers and reimbursements. Resolution 2026-14 allocates $138,344.74 to Council Solar Energy. Resolution 2025 26-15 reimburses $5,630.42 to Airport Oil. Resolution 2026-16 authorizes a transfer from General to First Aid Non-reverting funds. Resolution 2026-17 transfers $10,000 from CCIF other contractual services into ADA non-reverting funds. All four resolutions were moved, seconded, and passed by unanimous consent.
City Council Briefed on Planning Consultant, AI Data Centers, and State Mandates
Council members were invited to an area plan commission meeting to discuss planning and zoning issues, particularly related to AI data centers. A planning consultant with broad experience is assisting with these matters. Three documents were sent out to council members for review, focusing on issues, planning, zoning, and the process for initiating projects. The discussion highlighted the political sensitivity of AI data centers and the need for elected bodies to make decisions. It was noted that this is a complex and politically fraught issue, not suitable for volunteers on zoning boards. The council members' increased public contact and access were seen as beneficial for handling such matters. The goal is to establish basic procedures and understand pros and cons before developing ordinances. The meeting is scheduled for Thursday at 6:00 p.m. and will be available on YouTube. Additionally, a discussion arose regarding House Bill 1001, which imposes requirements on planning and BZA that must be met by the end of the year, including submitting a ton of information to the state, conducting public hearings, and reviewing ordinances. This is a significant undertaking that requires gathering extensive information.
