Youth Sports Foundation Donates $75,000 for Baseball Field Lighting Upgrades

The City Commission acknowledged a significant donation from the Texas Panhandle Youth Sports Foundation to address critical lighting issues at the baseball fields in the sports complex. The foundation contributed $75,000 towards the replacement of four light poles that had become unsafe and required replacement. This donation, combined with insurance coverage for a previously lost light, allowed the city to complete the LED lighting upgrades for all four fields, enhancing the facility. The foundation is transitioning its operations, with Casey's Incorporated taking over baseball operations, and it is expected to be absorbed into their foundation to continue supporting baseball initiatives, including potential scholarships and funding for projects in Canyon. A plaque will be installed to commemorate the foundation's contributions.

City Commission Approves Amended Master Fee Schedule with Various Updates

The City Commission considered and approved Ordinance Number 1252, which amends the city's Master Fee Schedule. This ordinance consolidates all city department fees into a single document for user convenience. Key changes include updates to swim lesson fees, municipal court fees, engineering/development/design/drainage review inspection fees, planning development contract registration fees, and an increase in baseball field rental fees at Paul Lindsey Park to cover rising maintenance costs. It also includes scheduled increases for water and commercial solid waste utility rates, following a 2022 utility rate study, to support debt obligations, operating costs, and reserves. New fees are introduced for practice field rentals at the Brown Road Recreation Center and for dangerous/bite animals, with additional animal control fees (licensing, vet care, adoption) planned for a future facility. A mobile food vendor inspection fee for the fire department permit ($35) was also added. Most fees are effective October 1st, 2026. Discussions also addressed payment processing fees for credit card transactions, with a proposed $3.50 fee per transaction for convenience, while maintaining the option for free direct draft payments. The city is working with a third party to monitor merchant card services.
