Berea City Council Appoints New Council Member, Honors Departing Official

Bluegrass Army Depot Update: Chemical Weapons Disposal Complete, New High-Tech Projects Underway
Craig Williams, program director for the Kentucky Environmental Foundation, provided an update on the Bluegrass Army Depot (BGAD) chemical weapons disposal facility. He highlighted the project's completion, including the safe disposal of hazardous materials and munitions, noting a local payroll of nearly $1.5 billion and over 18 million hours of work without serious injury or fatalities. The facility is now in its closure phase, with plans to repurpose or demolish infrastructure. Williams also detailed four new projects coming to the depot: a metal shipping facility, a drone innovation hub, an energetics plant for 155mm cargo projectiles, and a centralized security monitoring system utilizing AI and drones. Dr. William Ritter, BGAD Public Affairs Officer, elaborated on these projects, discussing their funding, development status, and potential employment impacts, emphasizing the reuse of existing infrastructure and the strategic importance of these new initiatives for national security and technological advancement.
