Wilmington Council Approves Rezoning for Military Cutoff Road Property

He highlighted issues like the closure of the north side splash pad due to a water leak and the lack of community events and partnerships. Shabbaz urged the council to invite grassroots organizations to the table, partner with them, and create more opportunities and hope for children, emphasizing the need for action and adult investment.
Childcare Provider Seeks City Zoning Amendment for 24-Hour Operations
Latonia Johnson, owner of Little Journeys childcare center, requested an amendment to Section R18207 of the city's zoning code to allow licensed family childcare homes to operate 24 hours a day. Currently, city zoning limits operation to 12 hours per day, while county regulations do not have this restriction. Johnson believes 24-hour care would benefit families, healthcare workers, first responders, shift workers, and military personnel.
Historic Preservation Commission Urges Council to Choose Lift Bridge, Oppose Tolls for Capefare Memorial Bridge Replacement
The Historic Preservation Commission presented concerns regarding the proposed replacement of the Capefare Memorial Bridge. They recommended choosing the 65-ft lift bridge option over the 135-ft fixed bridge option, citing that the lift bridge would cause minimal harm to the Wilmington Historic District, maintain the current right-of-way, and be more efficient for traffic and evacuations. The commission also recommended against tolls on the bridge, fearing negative impacts on downtown businesses and traffic diversion. They further requested that the city pass resolutions in favor of the lift bridge, opposition to tolls, and an expansion of the project's environmental review area.
