St. Paul Civics Club Presents Four Community Improvement Projects to City Council
The St. Paul School Civics Club presented four projects to the city council. The first, the 'Civic Serenity Squad,' focused on improving Mollins Park by painting rocks, landscaping around the sign, and adding white rocks, with a goal of making the park more welcoming. The second project, the 'technology group,' developed a website called 'Know Your Government' to enhance civic engagement by connecting the government and community through online tools, featuring interviews with local officials and information about Salem's government. The third group, the 'historical project group,' created cardboard cutouts of influential individuals from Salem, Ohio, and St. Paul School to demonstrate that influence can come from small cities. Each cutout included an audio excerpt detailing the person's life and impact. The fourth project, the 'creative project group,' interviewed four local veterans and compiled their stories into a pamphlet to ensure veterans are recognized for their contributions, which was distributed during a veterans flag dedication event. The council commended the students for their hard work and civic engagement.
City Council Clarifies DORA Policy, Approves Street Paving and Other Ordinances
The city council discussed and voted on several ordinances and resolutions related to Designated Outdoor Refreshment Areas (DORA), event applications, and infrastructure projects. Key discussions included clarifying the DORA policy for events like the Super Cruise, where the organizer, Brian May, formally requested to exclude DORA for the upcoming event due to potential confusion and concerns from car enthusiasts and some business owners. The council also addressed new ordinances regarding property taxes, the Salem Industrial Park, and naming a street section in honor of Earl Bruce. Additionally, resolutions were passed to continue the existing DORA and modify its parameters. The safety service director reported on upcoming street paving projects, including partnerships with ODOT and a potential CDBG grant for Holly Avenue.
Students Enhance Mollins Park, Making it More Welcoming
The 'Civic Serenity Squad' from St. Paul School presented their project to improve Mollins Park, previously known as the green park. Their efforts included cleaning up the park by picking up sticks and trash, landscaping around the park sign, painting large rocks, and adding white rocks to enhance the area's appearance. The students aimed to make the park more welcoming and beautiful. Council members and attendees praised the students' work, noting the significant improvement in the park's appearance and welcoming atmosphere.
