Advocate Proposes Atmospheric Water Generation for Ormond Beach
Alan Burton proposed that the city consider atmospheric water generation (AWG) technology, citing his personal experience with a unit that produces six gallons of clean drinking water daily. He suggested the city purchase at least one AWG unit for a demonstration project in a public facility. Burton highlighted the potential for AWGs to provide a sustainable water source, independent of aquifers, by extracting water from humidity in the air. He also noted that as the market grows, costs typically decrease, drawing a parallel to the declining price of flat-screen TVs. He believes AWGs could contribute to the community's water supply, especially if scaled up, estimating that 8,400 units could supply one gallon of water per person for Ormond Beach's 50,000 residents.
City Attorney to Research Data Center Regulations Amidst Ban Proposal
Commissioner Deaton requested staff to investigate Senate Bill 484 regarding data centers and expressed her desire for the city to ban them. City Attorney Randy Hayes stated he would research the bill and potential city actions, noting the need to consider federal and state orders, as well as SB 180. Hayes cautioned that the city must ensure it acts correctly within the existing legal framework. Deaton emphasized the commission's shared concern and requested an update on the matter.
Community Volunteers to be Honored for Police Appreciation Efforts
City Manager Joyce Shanahan requested a proclamation for Janice Godfrey and Carla Haynes for their annual efforts in providing food, snacks, and decorations at the police department during Police Week. Shanahan highlighted their dedication over the past three or four years, using their own money to make officers feel loved and respected. The City Clerk agreed to prepare the proclamation.
Ormond Beach Parks to Allow Sale and Consumption of Low-Proof Alcohol
The City Commission moved to approve Ordinance No. 2026-08 on its second reading, which amends Chapter 15 of the City Code to allow for the sale and consumption of commercially packaged low-proof alcoholic beverages in city parks. This ordinance change permits vendors to sell beverages such as White Claws and similar products. Commissioner Sargent highlighted that this is a replacement of a 2004 vehicle, expressing appreciation for staff's fiscal responsibility. The ordinance passed unanimously.
Ormond Beach Amends Comprehensive Plan for Ridgewood Avenue Parcel
The city Commission considered Ordinance No. 2026-09 on its first reading, which amends the comprehensive plan's future land use element. This ordinance changes the land use designation of a 0.39-acre parcel at 651 South Ridgewood Avenue from Volusia County Urban Medium Intensity to Ormond Beach Low Density Residential. Planning Director Stephen Spraker clarified that this aligns the city's designation with the existing single-family home after annexation and does not alter the property's current use. The planning board and city staff recommended approval. The motion to approve passed unanimously.
