Air Medics HVAC Donates Ambulance Rig to Niceville Fire Department; Chief Kakulas Honored for Savings on Fire Truck Purchase
The Niceville Fire Department received a donated ambulance rig from Air Medics HVAC for use in their paramedic program. The rig, though not operational, will serve as a training laboratory for new paramedics. The donation was formally recognized with a plaque presented to Travis Simpson and Nathan Magician of Air Medics HVAC. Additionally, Chief Kakulas was recognized for his negotiation skills which resulted in a $30,000 discount on three fire trucks purchased by the city.
Niceville Police Department Reports Increased Arrests Driven by Proactive Drug Enforcement in June
Chief Hedges reported on the Niceville Police Department's June 2026 activity, including 2,371 calls for service, 37 traffic crashes, 102 citations, 349 warnings, 36 criminal citations, 60 DUI citations, 11 misdemeanor arrests, and 18 felony arrests. There was an increase in misdemeanor and felony arrests compared to the previous 12 months, attributed to officers' proactive drug enforcement efforts. The department also hosted two Fatal Vision classes, received recognition at the Florida Traffic Safety Challenge, and is preparing for K9 Cody's retirement celebration. The department is also undergoing hiring for two dispatchers to reach full staffing.
City Council Approves Budget Amendment to Fund Three Fire Trucks
The council approved ordinance 26-07-02, an amendment to the budget for the fiscal year commencing October 1, 2025. This ordinance, along with a previously discussed amendment, allocates funds totaling approximately $1.3 million (comprising $500,000 in city funds and $802,980 from Valparaiso services) to cover the purchase of three fire trucks. The city manager recommended budgeting these funds to facilitate the payment for the vehicles.
Public Works Department Updates on Pipeline Projects, Well Maintenance, Drainage Repairs, and Roadway Improvements
The Public Works Department reported on various infrastructure projects, including the Reeds pipeline nearing completion, the Greenbelt sewer project awaiting manholes, and ongoing efforts for Well 6 which requires extensive disinfecting due to biological film. New Well 12 site preparation is complete. Reese water is being extended to Rocky Runaway Common park to remove it from public water. Generator bearings are expected to be replaced by month's end. Several storm water and drainage issues were addressed, including those on Pin Oak, Adams Street, River Oak Way, Pink Road/Bay Shore, Iowa Street, and Thomas Branch Road. A sinkhole repair is scheduled at Rudy Bond and Sable Palm, highlighting the ongoing issue with aging metal pipes. Pavement construction for First Baptist Church's parking lot has begun, and work continues on the multi-use trail on College Boulevard, with completion expected around September 19th. New sidewalk installation is planned for Lavelle Road and Boulevard near Holy Name Catholic Church to meet ADA requirements. The department also reported on water and sewer calls, light maintenance, and code compliance cases.
