Emergency Call Boxes and Wi-Fi Planned for Parks; Duck Pond Bridge Replaced
The town is planning to install emergency call boxes in parks due to communication shortcomings and dead spots for cell phone service. The initial phase will focus on busier parks like Gettney Park, Milwood Park, and Amsterdam Park, with plans to expand to smaller parks later. The project involves bringing Wi-Fi and call boxes to the parks, which will utilize internet connections from fiber optic cables. Verizon is being contacted to bring fiber cable to the parks, though scheduling is difficult. The call boxes will allow direct contact with the police department or 911. This initiative aims to improve safety and accessibility in the parks. Separately, the duck pond bridge was delivered and is scheduled for installation, with the old bridge removal to follow. The pedestrian walkway replacement along Quaker is expected to be completed in the fall.
Route 117 Closure Update: Project on Schedule for September 4th Completion Amidst Detour Challenges
Rob Deiri provided an update on the Route 117 closure, which began on June 29th. The project involves trenching and shoring for water and gas line relocation, removal and replacement of the old culvert, and installation of fencing and barriers. A bypass pumping system for water lines is also in place. The project is currently on schedule to be completed before September 4th, which is a critical deadline due to the return of school buses after Labor Day. Detour routes have been established, including a commercial detour down 120 and 128, and a recommended route for non-commercial vehicles via the Sawmill River Parkway. Efforts are being made to prevent commercial vehicles from using narrow local roadways. The Town Board President also wrote to state representatives regarding the safety hazards posed by traffic diversions to unsafe roads. Additional signage has been provided by the DOT, and flagmen are being requested. The project's completion by September 4th is considered non-negotiable.
Successful Summer Concert with Fireworks Draws Large Crowd, Fosters Community Spirit
The town celebrated a successful summer concert with fireworks on July 8th, which was attended by over 500 people, significantly exceeding the usual attendance for summer concerts. This event, along with a previous Knicks watch party, has been highlighted as a great success, contributing to a positive town vibe. Several individuals and organizations were thanked for their contributions, including Rob and Ike for initiating the idea, Summer for background support, Iusio for execution, Metro North for cooperation, Newcastle and Milwood Fire Departments for safety planning, NCPD and Chief Carol for maintaining safety, SVAC for standby support, the Chamber of Commerce for promotion, and the economic revitalization advisory task force for merchant coordination. The event is being considered for annual repetition.
Town Board Approves Administrative Items, Contract Renewals, and Staffing Changes
The Town Board approved multiple administrative items, including the payment of claims, contract extensions for tree removal services, and awarding bids for various projects like the Milwood Water Treatment Plant heating oil tank and DPW water treatment chemicals. They also authorized the purchase of equipment repair services and the renewal of software for the police department. Additionally, new staff hires and promotions within the Police Department and Department of Public Works were approved.
