Justin Olson Nominated to New Bedford Water Board

New Bedford Historical Commission Approves Demolition of Coffin Howland House
The New Bedford Historical Commission reviewed the demolition of the Coffin Howland House at 535 Brock Avenue. The house, built circa 1840-1854, is a contributing resource to the Hazelwood Park National Register and is significant for its association with the Joseph Howland estate. Despite its historical significance, the building is not preferably preserved due to extensive fire damage, a collapsed roof, ongoing vandalism, and long-term deferred maintenance, making restoration unfeasible. The commission determined that demolition is necessary due to safety hazards, with plans for reconstruction of a similarly scaled and architecturally sensitive building on the same footprint. Public hearings were held, with council members and residents expressing mixed sentiments regarding the demolition and potential future use of the site. The demolition was ultimately approved by the committee and referred to the full City Council. No funding for reconstruction has been identified yet.
City Council Seeks to Address Waste Collection Violations
