Board Approves Scholarship Trust, Addresses Coaching Concerns, and Honors Educators
The board convened and approved the meeting agenda for May 27, 2026, with a roll call vote. Presentations included the 'Excellence in Education' honorees, recognizing two groups of exceptional employees from the previous and current year. Awards were presented for classified, certificated (teachers, coaches, counselors), and management positions. Specific honorees mentioned include Veronica Oral (librarian), Andrea Martinez (co-ser), Lisa Gibbs (yard duty supervisor), Kathleen Squentes (administrator of the year), Charles Jen (previous administrator of the year), and Trefley Gina (teacher of the year). Following the presentations, reports were given by Corcoran High School, highlighting a successful prom with approximately 250 guests and upcoming graduations. The baseball team advanced to the Valley playoffs. The Superintendent's report congratulated the honorees and sports teams, and discussed a recent collaboration retreat with union presidents (Dulce Gonzalez and Rosanne Salceto) focusing on teamwork and communication. The report also mentioned the end-of-year festivities, including graduation, and noted potential temperature concerns. A discussion also occurred regarding the implementation of a 'clear back' policy. The Corkran Faculty Association President, Rosanne Salceto, congratulated retirees Robin Feldman, Evette Nunes, and Terry Hec. She also reported on preliminary Caspie State test scores showing improvement in math and ELA for John Muir, and mentioned outstanding contract edits. Dulce Gonzalez, CSA chapter president, spoke about the end of the school year, staff appreciation, and the revision of the state budget, noting a change in COLA projections and funding to eliminate deficits. She requested the district halt discussions on a proposed three-year staff reduction plan and emphasized the importance of the collaboration retreat for teamwork and communication. The JMS ASB vice president, Jayen Valdez, reported on campus activities including a spring concert by the combined JMS and CHS bands, the upcoming play 'Beauty and the Beast bed and breakfast,' a student showcase and open house, and end-of-year grade-level parties. The report concluded with anticipation for the eighth-grade promotion ceremony. Public comments included Monica Rodriguez expressing concerns about school employees' knowledge of policies, denial of a 504 plan, mishandling of medical records, and unequal access to campus classes for her child. She cited specific staff members and dates, and mentioned filing a uniform complaint. Milo Ramirez addressed concerns about the quality of coaching for the boys' basketball program at Corcoran High School, citing talent going elsewhere and the need for better coaching to retain students. Tulsa Gonzalez also raised concerns about the lack of qualified coaching in basketball, emphasizing the importance of sports for scholarships and student development. She requested a review of the Athletic Director position and a more rigorous coach evaluation process, noting that many athletes and parents are considering transferring their children to other districts due to coaching quality. The board then moved to action items, approving the Title I Part A LEA-level parent and family engagement policy. They also approved the Gary L. Coffman Trust Scholarship, involving a $133,000 estate donation to establish a scholarship fund. Approval was also given for change orders 02, 04, and 05 for the King's Lake Modular Food Service project, related to underground utilities, sewer line rerouting, and grease interceptor relocation. Resolution 1421, ordering governing board member elections for the November 3rd consolidated election, was approved. Resolution 1425, authorizing the establishment of an irrevocable trust for other post-employment benefits with a $1 million initial investment, was also approved, highlighting potential higher interest returns compared to the county treasury and reduced liability. The board agreed to bring forward participation in a BOR program for future reporting and to include Kings Lake in regular school reports.
