Water Department Reports on Stormwater Projects, Leak Detection, and New Hires
The Water Department report for June indicated that the outstanding stormwater projects are being monitored, with the Quick Check project nearing completion, leaving only punch list items. The Sharp Road development continues to be problematic with ongoing runoff and mud issues. Meter reading for the August billing period is underway. The department interviewed candidates for a laborers position and hired a new individual starting on Monday. Standard operating procedures are being developed for documentation and consistency, especially for pump station operations. All pump station check-ins are now logged electronically into the GIS system for better tracking and data analysis. Leak detection efforts have installed 220 sensors, with 13 remaining. A potential active leak has been detected in the Sickway Firehouse area, requiring further investigation due to the gravelly terrain. The department has reduced water consumption by 150,000 gallons per day compared to the previous year by plugging leaks. Further reports on savings and progress on Route 2 are anticipated. A motion to approve the report was made and seconded.
Building Department Addresses FOIL Request Backlog and Property Closures; New Businesses Open
The Building Department report for June indicated 119 building and property inspections, with 430 active open permits and 30 new permits issued. The department attended 11 meetings, including planning and zoning board sessions, and responded to two fire calls. They handled 11 code complaints, following up on seven. A significant issue discussed was the overwhelming number of FOIL (Freedom of Information Law) requests related to property closings, which are bogging down staff, particularly Wendy. Realtors are now requesting extensive documentation, including building permits and compliance information, leading to dozens of requests per month. The department used to charge for document copies but now must convert to electronic format, which is time-consuming without compensation. Additionally, there are many open permits from previous years that require research, making it difficult to issue certificates of occupancy or completion, which in turn holds up property closings. Residents are advised to hire engineers or consultants to review these older projects. New businesses opening include Quick Check, Mattress Firm, Chipoti, Golden Grain, Liquor Depot, and Whimsy Beam coffee shop. The Andy Gilchrist Library bookstore is also under construction.
Town Reports 97 EMS Calls in June; Over 550 Year-to-Date
The Town of Brunswick annual report for June indicated 97 EMS calls, with 95 covered by the town and two by North Greenbush Ambulance. The mean dispatch time for all calls was 9 minutes and 4 seconds, and for high priority calls, it was 8 minutes and 28 seconds. For the first half of the year (January to June), there were a total of 557 EMS calls, with 529 covered by Brunswick EMS, 22 by North Greenbush, five by Hoosick Valley, and one by Sand Lake. The mean dispatch time for the first six months was 9 minutes and 22 seconds, with high priority calls at 8 minutes and 36 seconds. The report noted that generally good things are being heard about the EMS service. A motion to approve the report was made.
Town Adopts Highway Plan, Sets Deputy Clerk Salary, and Amends Length of Service Award Program
Resolution number 54 adopts the 2026 Town Highway Plan. Resolution number 55 sets the salary for the deputy town clerk. Resolution number 56 amends the town-sponsored and administered length of service award programs to raise the years of service from 40 to 50 years and lower the payout age from 62 to 60. The motion for Resolution 56 was offered and seconded, with Councilman Sberly, Councilman Christian, and Councilman Sullivan voting in favor, Councilman Baliseri abstaining, and Supervisor Harrington voting in favor. The town clerk, Alicia, was commended for her excellent work, and the new deputy town clerk will provide assistance.
Town Board Honors Timothy J. Hudac for 50 Years of Service
The Town Board acknowledged and commended Timothy J. Hudac for 50 years of dedicated service to the residents of Brunswick. He joined the Eagle Mills Fire Department on March 1st, 1976, and has held various leadership roles, including first assistant chief, captain, and lieutenant. He also served as vice president and is currently a life member, treasurer, and director. His contributions include advanced training, participation in truck committees, chairing installation banquets, serving as a bell ringer for memorial services, and delivering critical funds and supplies to first responders after 9/11. He also serves as a senior fire investigator for Wler County and is on the fire advisory board, and was president, vice president, treasurer, and director of the Wler County Fire Chiefs Association. He also volunteered at a COVID-19 vaccine clinic. The resolution was moved by Councilman Severly and seconded by Councilman Christian. The council members who acknowledged the resolution were Councilman Severly, Councilman Christian, Councilman Sullivan, Councilman Valiseri, and Supervisor Harrington.
