Wyoming Police Department Acquires Two New Drones After Council Deliberation on Public Safety and Privacy

The drones will be used for various public safety purposes, including suspect pursuit, critical incidents, and providing aerial views at public events. The decision involved a discussion about privacy concerns, drone usage policies, and the necessity for officer safety, ultimately leading to an 8-5 vote in favor of the purchase. The funds for this acquisition will cover the drones, controllers, batteries, and other necessary accessories. The department has a policy in place regarding drone use, and a portion of this policy, outlining prohibited uses, was read aloud during the meeting.
Wyoming Modifies Deed for Burton Street Housing Project, Reducing Required Townhomes from Eight to Four Due to Federal Regulations
The council considered Resolution G, which aims to approve and authorize the Mayor and City Clerk to sign an amended and restated quitclaim deed with ICCF Nonprofit Housing Corporation. This deed conveys properties at 1038 and 1042 Burton Street. The amendment reduces the required construction of owner-occupied townhomes from eight to four. This change is due to regulations under the Build American Buy America Act, which made constructing eight units cost-prohibitive. The nonprofit will construct four homes initially and may build a fifth later. The motion was made by DeKreger, supported by Postma. The council approved the resolution with all members voting in favor.
Residents Voice Concerns Over Proposed Commercial Rezoning at 52nd and Wilson, Citing Traffic and Saturation Issues
During the acknowledgment of visitors, residents Pam McLennathan and Kenneth Howell addressed the council regarding a proposed rezoning of the northeast corner of 52nd Street and Wilson Avenue from residential to commercial. A realtor representing homeowners at this intersection had proposed a concept plan including a Trader Joe's and two fast-food restaurants. Residents expressed concerns about increased traffic, safety issues at the intersection, saturation of commercial businesses in the area, and the loss of community feel. They urged the council to rule against the rezoning. The proposal was scheduled for the Planning Commission on June 11th after the original meeting was canceled due to a quorum issue. Residents were encouraged to attend the Planning Commission meeting to voice their concerns.
