Township Committee Adopts Ordinances Updating Fire Code, Police Promotions, Penalties, Animal Control, and Sewer Regulations
Ordinance 2087 was adopted, updating the fire prevention code to align with state changes regarding smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, and secondary power source requirements. It also strengthens local provisions for fire hydrants, fire lanes, rapid entry systems, and outside burning, while maintaining the local fire extinguisher requirement. Ordinance 2088 was adopted, updating police promotional procedures by extending the sergeant's eligibility list from two to three years to align with civil service standards and ensure list currency. Ordinance 2089 was adopted, establishing a framework for a local violations bureau schedule to update general penalties. Ordinance 2090 was adopted, removing the local speeding penalty on township property as it is inconsistent with state law and unenforceable. Ordinance 2091 was adopted, consolidating animal control regulations into one chapter covering dogs, cats, and other animals, following review by Animal Control and the Board of Health. Ordinance 2092 was adopted, updating soil regulations by changing the connection threshold from 150 feet from the building to 100 feet from the property line for clearer enforcement by staff.
Township Committee Approves Consent Agenda, Including Minutes, Bills, Resolutions, and Special Event Signage Requests
The Township Committee approved the consent agenda, which included minutes from the May 5th, 2026 regular meeting and authorization for payment of bills. It also approved several resolutions: road closures for the Memorial Day Parade, appointments to the Bergen County Community Development Board, cancellation of taxes for a disabled veteran, redemption of a tax sale certificate, insertion of $44,128.13 for the Clean Communities Grant Program, and the provisional authority of the acting municipal court administrator. Two motions were approved: a special event application for temporary signage by the Wygolf Lions Club for their carnival, and a similar application for temporary signage by the Wygolf Baseball Boosters for their community day.
Township Committee Expresses Strong Opposition to State Affordable Housing Bill S-1836
The Township Committee discussed proposed state legislation S-1836, which would override municipal zoning on a broader scale by establishing three tiers of as-of-right development for affordable housing projects. These tiers allow for increased density (40, 60, or 80 units per acre) and additional stories above the normal height limit based on the percentage of affordable units (20%, 35%, or 50%). Committee members expressed strong opposition, viewing it as an overreach that would lead to high-rise housing projects in residential neighborhoods and negatively impact community character, citing historical failures of similar projects. They are exploring plans to oppose the bill and involve other municipalities.
Wycliffe Raider Third-Grade Girls Basketball Team Honored for League Championship Victory
The Township Committee recognized the Wycliffe Raider third-grade girls travel basketball team for winning the 2026 Northwest Berger-Passett Girls Travel Basketball League championship. The team achieved an overall record of 19 wins and three losses, including a 13-1 regular season record. This marks the first league championship for a White Coffee Girls Travel Basketball Team since 2023. The proclamation highlighted the players' commitment to team play, work ethic, and skills, and congratulated the team, head coach Mark Long, assistant coach Dan Bavina, and their families.
Fire Department Reports Significant Activity; Concerns Raised Over Proposed EMS Funding Bill
During the meeting, the fire department reported responding to 57 calls for service, including fire alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, accidents, and a garage fire, totaling over 800 man-hours. Year-to-date, they have responded to 267 calls. The Marine Division assisted Ridgefield Park with a car in the Hackensack River. A gas leak at the Vista required mutual aid from four towns and was handed over to PSEG with no injuries reported. The committee also discussed Bill S1421, which would require towns to budget for EMS, potentially eliminating volunteer EMS. The captain of the EMS requested residents write to senators in opposition.
