Residents Raise Concerns Over ICE Presence and 287G Agreements; Council Member Addresses Sentiment
During the open forum, residents Justin Roella and Marne raised concerns about the city's stance and potential cooperation with ICE and 287G agreements. Roella criticized the Mayor's statements as false regarding Operation Metro Surge and other cities' actions, emphasizing the council's responsibility to protect residents from federal actions. He urged the council to bring a resolution to an agenda for a clear vote on record. Marne specifically questioned if Woodbury PD has 287G agreements and if the city is cooperating with ICE, particularly in light of the new public safety center with space for law enforcement partners. Council member Morris responded, stating that as far as she knows, neither Woodbury nor Washington County Sheriff's Department has 287G, and acknowledged that other residents have contacted the council with opposing views, emphasizing the need to hear all perspectives.
City Updates on Memorial Day Tribute, Miracle League Opening, Juneteenth Educational Walk, and Volunteer Weed Pull
City Administrator Jeff Dah provided updates on recent community events. He thanked attendees and organizers for the Memorial Day event, highlighting the three-round cannon salute, flyover, and the contributions of the American Legion, VFW, and Alliance. He also mentioned the opening day of the Miracle League at MLK Fair Sports Center, praising the athletes, families, parks and rec team, and the Rotary for their involvement and field improvements, noting the field as a special amenity for the region. Looking ahead, the city will host an educational Juneteenth trail walk starting June 1st, with additional displays at KBY Lake and Ojiway Park, commemorating the holiday's history and its recognition as a state holiday and day of rest. Finally, he announced a 'weed pull' volunteer event at Hassenbank Park the following day, seeking community members to help remove invasive species like buckthorn and garlic mustard.
Local Students Recognized for National Art Competition Wins
The City Council recognized Woodbury residents Alyssa Wang and Will Kungara for winning first place in the Congressional Art Competition. Alyssa Wang won for her graphite piece 'Color Me Happy' in the fourth congressional district, and Will Kungara won for his digital piece 'Bowl of Unity' in the fifth congressional district. Both artworks will be displayed, with Alyssa's artwork to be displayed at the US Capitol for a year. The council invited them to speak about their work, inspirations, and mediums used. Alyssa detailed her graphite techniques and inspiration from a young girl at a festival, while Will explained his digital art process and how his piece symbolized family unity through food preparation, emphasizing the value of his experience at Perpich Center for the Arts Education.
City Administrator Jeff Dah Honored for Service to League of Minnesota Cities Board
The League of Minnesota Cities recognized City Administrator Jeff Dah for his service on the League's board of directors. Luke Fischer, Executive Director of the League, and Evan Vogel, Second Vice President and Cambridge City Administrator, presented the recognition. They highlighted Jeff Dah's significant impact on the League, particularly his representation of the metro area and his role as president of Metro Cities. His service on the board involved legislative advocacy covering a wide range of city issues and ensuring the League was pointed in the right direction to provide necessary services to its 842 member cities. Jeff Dah expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, emphasizing the collaborative and insightful nature of the board and staff.
City Approves Liquor Licenses for Brewery Expansion, Fitness Center, and Entertainment Venue
The City Council approved liquor licenses for three establishments. First, Third Act Brewery received approval for on-sale intoxicating wine and beer licenses, a manufacturer's intoxicating liquor brew pub license, and a brew pub off-sale intoxicating liquor license. This expansion allows them to sell wine and hard cider in addition to beer. Second, LTF Club Operations Company, doing business as Lifetime, was granted an on-sale intoxicating wine and beer license, including Sunday sales, to enhance member experiences and events. Council Member Morris raised questions about public safety, carding, and compliance for Lifetime, given it's a fitness facility rather than a hospitality business. Staff confirmed compliance checks and adherence to state laws, with Lifetime confirming staff training and designated consumption areas. Third, Main Event Entertainment Incorporated received an on-sale intoxicating liquor license, including Sunday sales. This is the first Main Event location in Minnesota, with an anticipated opening on August 3rd, and hiring starting mid-June.
