Village of Western Springs Honors Emergency Medical Services Week
The Village Board recognized the 52nd annual Emergency Medical Services Week, from May 17th to May 23rd, 2026. The proclamation celebrated the vital role of EMS in safeguarding residents' health and safety, acknowledging the dedication of EMTs, paramedics, firefighters, dispatchers, police officers, nurses, and physicians. The village has a long history in EMS, being the first in the area to provide ambulance service in 1948, adopting the EMT program in 1972, and establishing the first paramedic program in the area in 1979. The report highlighted the department's continued high level of training and service.
Village Board Approves Multiple Items via Omnibus Vote
The Village Board approved a collective omnibus vote for multiple ordinances, resolutions, and motions that had been previously discussed. This procedure allows for a single vote on a group of items. Trustee Chen moved to adopt the items, which included a labor agreement with the police union, a temporary use permit for a fashion show, contracts for asphalt hot box, valve exercising, sewer televising, street resurfacing, construction engineering, a design engineering amendment for Gilbert Avenue, disposal of surplus property, a fire system reporting service agreement, and a proclamation for EMS Week. Trustee Fink seconded the motion. All trustees voted in favor, with President Rudolph also voting aye.
April 2026 Financial Report Shows General Fund Surplus and Strong Police Pension Returns
Director Messidona presented the April 2026 financial report. The General Fund showed a surplus of approximately $500,000 (excluding the Cook County tax delay), with sales tax revenue being 8% higher than anticipated, reflecting a positive local economy. The Water and Sewer Fund was 3% lower in billed water compared to the prior year but was not a cause for concern. The Police Pension Fund achieved realized and unrealized gains of 5.41% in April, contributing to a 12-month return of 23.17%, which helps reduce the unfunded liability. The fund held $1.8 million in cash and its allocation in IPOPIF was over $23.5 million. Trustee Martin made a motion to approve the report, which was seconded and passed unanimously via roll call vote.
