West Valley City Finalizes Fiscal Year 2026 Budget with Focus on Fire Department and Infrastructure

The city is undergoing its final budget opening for fiscal year 2026. This process accommodates rollovers from previous years, new revenues, ongoing projects, and the regular operation of the city. Key items include the 'safer grant' which funds new firefighters, new ambulances for the fire department, a new ladder truck expected in July (ordered three years ago), and two additional pumper trucks expected in 2028. Other items include an asphalt overlay project (a joint effort with Taylorsville), additional arena budget for operations, a backup generator, and reimbursements for the shelter, which has been deemed permanent. The budget opening also covers cleanup items from the end of the year.

City Park Baseball Score Tower to be Redesigned with TRCC Grant Funding

The council reviewed a grant awarded for the redesign of the baseball score tower at City Park. The grant from the TRCC (Tourism, Recreation, Conventions, and ...) is for half of the design cost, totaling $25,000, with the city covering the other half. This is a preliminary step before applying for funding for the construction of the tower, which is approximately 45 years old and in poor condition. The grant contract required a quick turnaround for approval by the county council before the end of the fiscal year.

Sewer Lift Station Project Prompts Zone Change Request for Granger Hunter

A zone change request was presented for a parsonage property, approximately one-third of an acre, which was carved out of a larger UDOT parcel used for stormwater detention. Granger Hunter purchased this parcel to build a new sewer lift station. The property is currently zoned A2 (agricultural) and the lot size does not meet zoning requirements. The request is to rezone it to R110, aligning with the adjacent zoning to the south. The plan is to combine the new parcel with the existing Granger Hunter property where the old sewer lift station is located, creating a consolidated site for the new station. The development agreement includes extending roadway 5990 West, dedicating land for a sidewalk, installing a temporary turnaround, extending a pre-cast wall along the north side of the property, and setting back fences along streets. The address for the development agreement, which includes both properties, is 6158 West 2920 South.

Family Fitness Center Proposes Fee Increases for Childcare and Camp Programs

An ordinance was presented to increase fees for childcare services at the Family Fitness Center. The proposed increases are $2 per hour for childcare, $4 per day for kids camp programs, and $3 per day for after-school camp programs. These increases are expected to generate approximately $30,000 in additional yearly revenue. Specific changes include increasing non-member childcare fees from $4 to $6 per hour, with the first hour of member childcare remaining free and subsequent hours increasing from $2 to $4 per hour. Kids camp fees will rise from $36 to $40 per day, and after-school camp fees from $17 to $20 per day. The member discount for these camps will decrease from 15% to 10%. The increases are attributed to rising costs in compliance, transportation, and labor.

Council Member Highlights Need for Restroom Facilities at Veteran's Memorial

A council member commented on the need for restroom facilities at the Veteran's Memorial, especially when events are held there. They noted that porta-potties might be a temporary solution for future events, as adding permanent sewer connections would be expensive for infrequent use. They also mentioned that the park restroom across the street might not have been open during a recent event.
