City Council Approves Vehicle Sales, Parts Reuse, and Discusses Staffing Needs
The council approved the sale of a PD charger through Renee Bates auction houses. This vehicle, a 2012 model that was previously used by Tommy Verrett, is being stripped of usable equipment before being auctioned for surplus. The council also approved amending a resolution to authorize the use of the transmission from unit 200 (a 2016 Matt garbage truck) for repair of truck number 302, with the damaged truck then being sold for parts. The original buyer for truck 200 withdrew their offer. Additionally, the council approved the creation of a part-time permit clerk position for code enforcement due to increased workload. The need for this position was highlighted by a 47% increase in violation letters, a 15% increase in permitting, and a 65% increase in permit costs over the last two years. The current single permit clerk is overwhelmed, leading to code officers sometimes acting as clerks, which is inefficient. The council tabled a discussion on a part-time permit clerk for code enforcement to the next meeting for further discussion.
Structure at 1020 Strickland Declared Public Nuisance, Demolition Ordered
The council held a public hearing and approved an ordinance declaring the structure at 1020 Strickland, Vidor, Texas, a public nuisance and ordering its demolition. Code Enforcement Supervisor Rick Vyson presented findings from inspections conducted on March 14th and January 5th, noting severe fire damage and a safety hazard posed by an unmaintained pool which the city had to drain. The owner, George Ferris Jr., has filed for bankruptcy and indicated withdrawal from responsibility for the property, stating Shellpoint Mortgage had no interest. The property was red-tagged and prohibited for occupancy. Due to the extensive damage, repair costs would exceed 50% of the fair market value, making demolition the only viable option. Notice was provided to the owner and lienholders. A resident from the neighborhood spoke in support of demolition due to the hazard the property poses.
West Circuit Detention Pond Plans Approved by City Council
The council approved the 100% plans for the West Circuit Detention Pond, a project aimed at converting city-owned property into a retention pond. This involves regrading and reshaping ditches to direct water flow into the new pond and manage excess flows. The project is a result of years of property buyouts in the area, made possible by sufficient land acquisition following events like Hurricane Harvey. The approval is contingent upon final approval from the grant administrator and city staff. This project is considered exciting and long-awaited.
Owner Demolishes 1290 Dogwood Property, Debris Cleanup Pending
The council held a public hearing regarding the property at 1290 Dogwood. The Code Enforcement Supervisor reported that the owner demolished the structure at his own expense before the city's demolition process began, thus no action was required by the council. However, there is still debris that needs to be cleaned up, which the owner is expected to handle.
Structure at 310 East Tram Declared Public Nuisance, Demolition Ordered After Second Fire
The council held a public hearing and approved an ordinance declaring the structure at 310 East Tram, Vidor, Texas, a public nuisance and ordering its demolition. This property has burned twice, first being repaired and then burning again. Inspections on February 13th, 2026, confirmed severe damage. The owner, Mr. Lawson, contacted the city regarding commercial opportunities for the property due to its zoning but showed no concern for repairing the damage. The property remains in the same condition and is considered a violation of city code, a dangerous and substandard structure, dilapidated, unfit for human habitation, and a hazard to public health, safety, and welfare. Repair costs would exceed 50% of fair market value. Notice was provided to the owner and lienholders, and the demolition costs will be filed as a lien against the property.
