City Council Considers Rezoning of Highway 31 Property, Schedules Public Hearing
The City Council discussed an ordinance to rezone a property at 11699 US Highway 31 from R1 Single Family Residential to M1 Light Industrial District. The Planning Commission recommended rezoning to B4 Major Business District instead, allowing the council to choose a more restrictive classification. A public hearing is scheduled for June 15th. This property was annexed by legislative action and initially zoned R1, but its location adjacent to existing commercial uses like a sawmill and diesel mechanic shops, and its position within an established commercial corridor, led to the rezoning request. The proposed B4 zoning aims to align the property with its surroundings and improve functionality, rather than expand commercial activity into new areas. Concerns were raised about the transition from industrial to residential areas and the appropriateness of M1 versus B4 zoning.
Valor Park Project Moves Forward with Approved Change Orders and Contract Adjustments
The City Council approved change orders one and two for the Valor Park project, which is funded by G Mesa. Change order one extends the contract period by seven days due to delays in permitting from ALDOT review, without increasing costs. Change order two addresses additional grading, paving, and ADA ramps due to changes in slopes, and also deducts costs for certain concrete structures and pavement markings based on revised plans. The net result of change order two is an increase in the contract price of approximately $45,624.88. The council agreed to suspend the rules to expedite the approval process to keep the project moving forward, noting significant progress in recent weeks including the installation of palm trees, curbs, and sidewalk work.

Agreement Approved for Spanish Main Phase 2 Sidewalk Project to Enhance Walkability
The City Council approved resolution number 1598 2026, which approves an agreement for professional services with Sawrass Consulting LLC for the Spanish Main Phase 2 sidewalk project. The agreement is for $33,000 and covers design and construction inspection for approximately 2100 linear feet of sidewalk from Pirates Lane to Lancers. This project aims to increase walkability in the community, with the Spanish Main area identified as a key connector between Highway 22 and Highway 31. This was the first reading of the resolution and will be carried over to the next meeting.
