Three Skoi students received the 2026 Skoi Technology Advancement and Transformation Award for their science fair projects. Junior Avira Hosakcot presented 'Spectra,' a novel approach to detecting real-time deep fake audio using AI voice modulations, showing ingenuity and purpose in experiment design. The commission noted the relevance of these projects to community life, such as understanding surface friction for infrastructure and developing tools to combat AI-driven scams.
Main Street Property Rezoned from Mixed-Use to Commercial
The village board discussed and approved a zoning map amendment for the property at 47441 Main Street, rezoning it from CX core mixed-use to B2 commercial. This change affects the area including the former 7-Eleven and the Fulin restaurant. The CX zoning was originally intended for downtown mixed-use but had not materialized as intended in this area. The B2 zoning is considered more appropriate for the existing and potential auto-oriented uses in the vicinity, aligning with the broader B districts prevalent on Main Street. This rezoning is part of an effort to create a more cohesive zoning quadrant rather than spot zoning.
Village Increases Amusement Tax, Includes Streaming Services, to Fund Ambulance and Services
The village board approved an ordinance amending the village code to increase the amusement tax from 5% to 2% and expand the definition of amusement to include streaming services. This change follows the lead of other municipalities like Evanston, East Dundee, and Chicago. The increased revenue generated from this tax is earmarked for specific projects: funding a fourth ambulance needed during peak hours and supporting enhancements to the building and neighborhood services division. The board emphasized that this is not a regressive tax, as residents can choose whether to subscribe to streaming services or attend other forms of entertainment like theater performances.
Village Declares June 2026 Immigrant Heritage Month
The village recognized June 2026 as Immigrant Heritage Month. The proclamation, read by Trustee Shakar, highlighted the contributions of immigrants to the nation's economy and character, emphasizing that nearly all residents have immigrant heritage. It noted that immigrants continue to drive business growth, innovation, and job creation. The proclamation also acknowledged the cultural enrichment immigrants bring to Skoi, where residents represent over 100 countries and speak over 90 languages. The village affirmed its commitment to supporting inclusive and just policies, recognizing that immigration strengthens the village's culture and prosperity.
Village Celebrates 77th Anniversary of Charcoal Oven Restaurant
The village celebrated the 77th anniversary of the Charcoal Oven restaurant, a family-owned establishment. Mayor Tennis recognized Maria Franco, the second-generation owner, and her husband Rich Franco. The restaurant was proclaimed 'Charcoal Oven Day' several years ago by a previous mayor.
