Concert Series for Summer Announced, Including Kids' Concerts
Councilmember Doe announced the kickoff of the annual Concerts in the Commons series on June 10th, which will be co-hosted by the Shoreview Community Foundation and include ice cream treats. The Kids' Concerts in the Commons series will begin on July 1st and run for five additional weeks. Residents are encouraged to attend these free events.
Human Rights Commission Appoints New Regular and Student Members
The City Council appointed Matthew Aries to a regular vacancy on the Human Rights Commission, with his term ending January 31st, 2028. Pranav Pulagunla was appointed as a student representative, with his term ending May 31st, 2029. Both candidates were noted for their impressive resumes and volunteer experience, with Aries working in healthcare management and serving on a state Health Equity council, and Pulagunla being an incoming sophomore with extensive volunteer work. The motion to appoint both individuals passed unanimously.
Water Efficiency Rebate Program Renewed, Focus Shifts to Toilets
Councilmember Gardner announced that the city has received a renewed grant for the Mid Council water efficiency rebate program, which will now focus on toilets rather than irrigation controllers. The existing grant for both toilets and irrigation controllers will close on June 30th or when funds are depleted. She emphasized the water-saving benefits of replacing old toilets and inefficient sprinkler systems, noting that smart irrigation controllers can pay for themselves within a year or two.
Community Events and Membership Special Announced
Councilmember Springhorn provided updates on community events, including the Shoreview native plant sale pickup on Thursday, June 11th, at the ICE Arena parking lot. She also announced the opening of the farmers market every Tuesday through September 1st, from 3 to 7 p.m. in the community center's lower-level parking lot. Additionally, she promoted a summer membership special for the community center at $40 per person for 30 days, available through June 30th.
Students Present Award-Winning Clean Energy Initiative for Small Businesses
Two students, Cora Gentry and Ida Thoreen, presented their winning project from the America's Future Summit, which focused on powering a clean energy future by bridging the gap between small businesses and accessible clean energy solutions, specifically through the installation of LED light bulbs. They won $5,000 to implement their idea and are currently developing a budget and timeline, with plans to connect with businesses in the metro area and Shoreview. The council members expressed enthusiasm and support for their initiative, highlighting the importance of their work in relation to the city's climate goals.
