City Council Approves 2026-2027 Operating Budget Amidst Heated Debate on School Funding
The City Council voted on the annual operating budget for 2026-2027, following a public hearing where no residents spoke. Council members engaged in a lengthy discussion regarding the budget, the school department's funding, and past financial decisions. Despite disagreements and accusations of financial mismanagement and lack of transparency from the school committee, the council ultimately approved the amended budget. Additional discussions involved capital budgets and capital improvement programs for 2026-2027 and 2027-2031, respectively, both of which were approved for second passage.
School Committee Member Critiques City Budget, Cites Underfunding and Disrespect
During a public comment period, Omar Reyes, a member of the school committee, expressed concerns about the school department's underfunding and the proposed 3% budget increase, which he stated would not cover the $7 million deficit and would lead to layoffs and larger class sizes. He criticized the city council's past actions regarding school surplus funds and highlighted the poor performance of schools in the state. Reyes also spoke about experiencing disrespect and personal targeting from city council members. Superintendent Buck sent a letter expressing gratitude for the council's support of the school department.

Separately, the City Council discussed and approved for first passage an ordinance amending the fire prevention code related to outdoor burning and cooking, aiming to enhance safety by establishing clearer regulations on distances, types of wood, and requiring safeguards such as hoses.
