City Addresses Urban Heat Island Effect and Warming Center Operations
A resident inquired about the city's efforts to combat the urban heat island effect and lack of shade, citing increased temperatures due to climate change and impermeable surfaces. They also asked about the capacity of warming centers during heat events and whether the city relies on state declarations of emergency to open them. Mr. Dulis confirmed that 'Code Red' (warming center activation) is called by the city based on temperature, not solely state declarations, and provided details on current procedures. Information on tree planting initiatives and other departmental ideas for combating the heat island effect was promised.
