Nampa City Council Proclaims June Elder Abuse Awareness Month
The Nampa City Council recognized June as Elder Abuse Awareness Month with a proclamation, highlighting the growing elderly population and the increasing issue of elder abuse. The Nampa Family Justice Center reported assisting over 300 older adults last year and training law enforcement on identifying and reporting elder abuse. Patrice Harris, Elder Project Coordinator, emphasized the need for community support and training for law enforcement and community members on this issue.
Nampa Council Allocates $97,440 in CDBG Funding to Public Services
The council considered allocating $97,440 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding for public services. Staff recommended allocating funds equally ($24,351 each) to four eligible applicants: Nampa Family Justice Center, Meals on Wheels, Salvation Army, and Jesse Tree. A fifth applicant will be held as an alternate. Councilman Griffin proposed fully funding Nampa Family Justice Center ($30,000), Meals on Wheels ($24,000), and Salvation Army ($30,000), and then reallocating the remainder to Boys and Girls Club of Canyon County instead of Jesse Tree. After discussion regarding the impact and funding levels, the council voted to approve the staff's recommended allocation, reversing the amounts for Meals on Wheels and Salvation Army, with Meals on Wheels receiving $29,500 and Salvation Army receiving $24,351.
Nampa Public Works Reports on Water Initiatives and Student Outreach
Tom Point, Senior Public Works Director, introduced Kelly Black, Communications Manager, to report on the city's water initiative. Black highlighted ongoing public education efforts regarding Nampa's water sources (stormwater, irrigation, groundwater, reuse water) and the importance of reuse water, especially with a pending drought. The city has 5,000 acre-feet of reuse water, which is 15% of its irrigation system demand. Public Works also engaged 650 fourth and fifth graders in Water Education Days and 115 students in a Public Works Activity Fair to promote STEM education and future careers.
Ora Brandt Park Pickleball Courts to Receive Lighting Installation
The council approved a motion to authorize the installation of lighting on the Ora Brandt Park pickleball courts. Cody Swander, Parks and Recreation Director, indicated that the lighting is ordered and installation can begin within a few weeks upon approval.
Morell Construction Awarded Bid for Annual Waterline Replacement Project
The council authorized the bid award and contract signing with Morell Construction for the annual waterline replacement project for Fiscal Year 2026, in the amount of $812,863. This amount is approved under the budget.
