Lakewood Schools Approves Agreements for Internet, Transportation, HVAC, and Stadium Use
The Lakewood Board of Education is considering several agreements for services and infrastructure. These include an agreement with Bluebird Fiber for internet access, which is projected to save $5,400 over three years compared to the previous provider. They are also reviewing agreements with ODS Transportation and Auxilio Services, Inc. for student field trip transportation, aiming to diversify contracts. A contract with Brewer Garrett Company for HVAC, water treatment, and building automation system monitoring and support for all buildings was awarded following a competitive bid process, with an annual cost of $146,112 for fiscal year 2027. An agreement with Innovative Solutions Group, Inc. for a food service sanitation and safety program costs $18,000 annually. Lastly, a rental agreement with St. Edward High School for the use of First Federal Lakewood Stadium for home varsity football games in 2026 was presented.
Lakewood Superintendent Resigns for Retirement, Re-employment to be Considered
The Lakewood Board of Education accepted the resignation of Superintendent Maggie Nitzwiki for the purpose of retirement, effective July 31st, 2026. The resignation includes a request for re-employment as superintendent. Ohio law requires a public notice and a public meeting to consider re-employment. The board approved the resignation on one reading and scheduled a public meeting for July 6th to receive public input on the re-employment. The board emphasized that this is a personal financial decision for the superintendent and does not represent an additional cost to the district, as her existing contract through 2029 remains in effect. The decision is to continue her current contract rather than issue a new one. The board acknowledged that the term 'double dipping' is used in the Ohio Revised Code and can be misleading.
Lakewood Board of Education Reviews Numerous Employment and Compensation Actions
The Lakewood Board of Education is considering a resolution to approve the employment contracts for the assistant treasurer and a superintendent. Additionally, they are reviewing 96 total certified actions, including appointments and special compensation, one certified non-employee coach or advisor appointment, 38 classified actions (12 appointments and 26 special compensation), and six classified non-employee coach or advisor appointments. The board is also reviewing 51 community recreation, education, and athletics actions, and has a resolution to amend employment contracts for the assistant treasurer and superintendent. These actions are part of the regular board business and will be voted on in two weeks.
Resident Advocates for Publishing Meeting Packets to Enhance Transparency
A resident suggested that the Lakewood school district regularly publish supporting documents, referred to as meeting packets, on the board docs platform. Currently, agendas are available, but detailed documents like contracts, scope, costs, and provisions are not readily accessible without a separate records request. The resident cited neighboring districts (Bay Village, Rocky River) and the city of Lakewood as examples of entities that make their meeting packets available. Redaction of sensitive information was acknowledged as necessary. This would enhance transparency, understanding of decision-making processes, and potentially reduce records requests.
Legislative Update: School Vouchers and DEI Policies Under Scrutiny
During the legislative report, two bills were discussed: Ohio House Bill 443 (Take the Dough, We Got to Know) and Senate Bill 113. HB 443 aims to audit state dollars in private school voucher programs, create report cards for academic performance, and require standardized testing. It includes provisions for reporting enrollment, voucher student numbers, students with disabilities, English learners, tuition costs, religious instruction, accreditation, attendance records, criminal background checks, and dropout/graduation rates. Ohio House Speaker Matt Huffman is reportedly pushing back against this bill. SB 113, sponsored by Senator Andrew Brenner, would require local school boards to end diversity and inclusion offices and ban DEI training, which its sponsor claims prioritizes merit over identity. Opponents have submitted testimony citing concerns about the bill's vague definition of DEI, potential interference with civil rights protections and the IDEA act, and harm to special education and gifted programs. The bill is currently in committee.
