Wentworth Adopts Rockingham County Comprehensive Transportation Plan

The Wentworth Town Council received a presentation on the Rockingham County Comprehensive Transportation Plan (CTP) and voted to adopt it for Wentworth. The CTP is a long-range, need-based plan developed with local stakeholders, the RPO, and NCDOT, considering all modes of transportation (highways, bicycle, pedestrian, public transit, rail, air, ferry) over a 25-30 year horizon. It identifies existing problems and future needs, aligning with complete street policies and informing the public about project prioritization. The plan was developed from winter 2023 to a proposed fall 2026 completion, with Wentworth seeking local adoption in 2026. Specific recommendations for Wentworth include highway improvements like widening NC 87 (Recommendation 7) to five lanes with a center turn lane and modernizing the rest to US 29 business, with right-of-way acquisition around 2030 and construction around 2034 as it's currently funded in the STEP program. Other highway recommendations include converting NC 14 to a four-lane facility with a median (Recommendation 10) and modernizing NC 65 and Advance Street extension. Public transit recommendations include expanding SCAT bus routes to connect Wentworth with Eden and Madison. Bike and pedestrian recommendations include sidewalks, bike lanes, and multi-use paths, with specific routes identified on maps. Council members discussed concerns about safety for bike lanes on certain roads, and the long-term nature of transportation projects, noting that while the CTP provides a roadmap, funding and implementation are subject to future decisions and availability, except for the NC 87 widening which is committed.
