City Celebrates Successful Events, Plans Future Community Gatherings
During the City Manager's report and subsequent commissioner comments, several events and initiatives were celebrated. The 'King of the Castle' event, a skateboard competition, was highly praised for its success, attracting participants from South Florida and being well-attended. EarthFest was noted as the largest ever, with 110 vendors, and its wellness component will be expanded into a separate event. A yoga festival and speakers are planned for February as a health component. The swearing-in of five new police officers was also highlighted as a significant event. Additionally, the city is planning a ribbon-cutting ceremony for 'Dewdrop' on May 9th. The Caspery Food and Wine Festival is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, November 8th.
City Commission Approves Meeting Minutes, Consent Agenda, and Issues Proclamations
The City Commission reviewed and approved the minutes from the March 9th meeting. Additionally, four proclamations were presented and acknowledged: National Drinking Water Week (May 3-9), National Biking Month (May), Building Safety Month (May), and the 57th annual Professional Municipal Clerks Week (May 3-9). The proclamations recognized the importance of water resources, the benefits of bicycling, the role of building safety officials, and the contributions of municipal clerks. The consent agenda, encompassing items A through E, was also approved unanimously.
Castleberry Corners Development of Community Impact Site Plan Approved
The City Commission approved the site plan for the development of community impact at Castleberry Corners, located at 201 and 205 State Road 436. This approval follows an adopted PUD agreement and concept plan and focuses on the infrastructure and stormwater portions of the project. The development, zoned PMX mid and over three acres, qualifies as a development of community impact. The master development plan mirrors the concept plan approved via Ordinance 26-1631, with the current scope preparing the development for four upcoming building sites and including preliminary landscaping and stormwater inlets. The approval was granted with specified conditions.
Resident Raises Concerns Over Lake Conditions, Proposes Eco-Friendly Solutions
A resident addressed the commission regarding the poor condition of the city's lakes, citing stagnant water, mosquito larvae, and dead vegetation. The resident proposed solutions including installing solar-powered aerators, clearing dead vegetation, and planting native shoreline species like lavender, lemongrass, rosemary, and marigold. They also suggested using a specific organic bacteria (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis) to kill larvae without harming wildlife, and keeping water moving. The resident expressed a deep love for the lakes and concern for the ecosystem, offering to help organize clean-up efforts.
Alexander Fortes Appointed to Parks and Recreation Advisory Board
The commission considered the appointment of a new member to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. Three applications were received to fill a vacancy created by Janice Zeiger's resignation, with the term expiring January 31st, 2027. Commissioners found all candidates to be strong. Alexander Fortes was nominated and subsequently appointed to the board for the unexpired term.
