City Secures $80,000 Coastal Incentive Grant for Glenn Middle School Flood Mitigation
The City of Brunswick received a Coastal Incentive Grant from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for flood mitigation related to the Lanier Boulevard and Glenn Middle School area. This grant is for year one of the project and will provide up to $80,000, requiring a one-to-one local match of $80,080. The local match will consist of $50,000 in cash from SPLOST 2022 storm drainage funds and $30,080 in in-kind contributions from staff time. The grant aims to address drainage issues, elevate roadways, improve the school driveway, connect marsh pockets, and implement runoff reduction measures at the middle school, including pervious paving.
City Approves Agreement with GDOT for MLK/Altama Bicycle Corridor Design Funding
The City of Brunswick will move forward with a Memorandum of Agreement with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) to secure funding for the design of the Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Altama Avenue Bicycle Pedestrian Corridor. GDOT has awarded $456,219 through the carbon reduction program. The city is required to provide a 20% match of $114,055, bringing the total design budget to $570,274. This funding is specifically for the design and engineering phase, not construction. The city plans to procure a consultant to work on the design from Gloucester Street to the northern city limits. The city's match will be funded from the SPLOST 2022 category for trails and boardwalks, which has approximately $2.7 million available.
City Contracts Godwin Mills Kwood for $280,000 Flood Mitigation Engineering Services
The City Commission approved an engineering services agreement with Godwin Mills Kwood for engineering and design services related to the Lanier Boulevard, Glenn Middle School flood mitigation project. The agreement covers both year one and year two of the project, with a total cost of $280,000. This includes $130,000 for year one tasks and $150,000 for year two tasks. The Coastal Incentive Grant will fund $80,000 for each year, with the city providing a match of $50,000 for year one and an anticipated $70,000 for year two. Godwin Mills Kwood is a qualified consultant familiar with the project.
City and Glynn County Enter Agreement for Senior Center Funding
The City Commission approved an intergovernmental agreement between the City of Brunswick and Glynn County for funding the senior center. The county will allocate $80,000 to support the senior center's services, which have been provided for nearly 34 years to seniors from both the city and county. This is the first time the county has contributed funding to the senior center. The funds will be used for services, staff, and general expenses. The agreement is for the fiscal year 2026, and both parties anticipate a similar agreement for fiscal year 2027, to be processed around the same time next year during budget preparations.
