The board also discussed various public works activities, including the annual 'touch a truck' event, the American Public Works Association's Chicago Metro chapter expo, and competitions involving snowplow and excavator operation. An employee participated in a panel discussion on the future of public works leadership. Additionally, updates were provided on downtown streetscape improvements, which have received positive community feedback despite ongoing construction.
Village Gears Up for Summer Celebrations, Including America 250 Events
The Village Board discussed upcoming summer activities and events, particularly those celebrating America 250. The village is partnering with Bington's White House and the Bington Cultural Commission to coordinate programs. Key partners include the school, library, Signal Hill NSDAR, American Legion, and Bington Veterans Group. A dedicated America 250 landing page (barington-l.govamea250) features village and partner events. Bington's White House secured a $35,000 grant from the Pepper Family Foundation for two patriotic outdoor concerts by the Elgen Symphony Orchestra. Bington High School will create a float for America 250 with assistance from its summer theater department and public works. The cultural commission is coordinating a poetry program with BHS and district 220. Enhancements to the parade include free participation for nonprofits creating floats, with 25 nonprofits signed up. New additions to the parade include the Rhythm Messengers drum group, German wheels, and the reestablishment of the Barington Community Band. Jim Cornelison will perform the national anthem post-parade. Memorial Day weekend will feature the art festival and parade/ceremony, with the American Legion leading. Residents will receive 250 American hornbeam saplings to plant as living memorials for veterans. Commemorative t-shirts, koozies, and bandanas will be distributed.
Village Board Approves Consent Agenda Items Including Lease, Budget Amendment, and Sewer Work
